Flashback: Stephen Hawking warned AI could mean the 'end of the human race' in years leading up to his death

Long before Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak signed a letter warning that artificial intelligence poses "profound risks" to humanity, British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking had been sounding the alarm on the rapidly evolving technology.

"The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," Hawking told the BBC in an interview in 2014.

Hawking, who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for more than 55 years, died in 2018 at the age of 76. Though he had critical remarks on AI, he also used a very basic form of the technology in order to communicate due to his disease, which weakens muscles and required Hawking to use a wheelchair.

Hawking was left unable to speak in 1985 and relied on various ways to communicate, including a speech-generating device run by Intel, which allowed him to use facial movements to select words or letters that were synthesized to speech.

STEPHEN HAWKING SAID 'THERE IS NO GOD' AND THAT HUMANS WILL 'LIVE IN SPACE' IN FINAL BOOK

Hawking’s comment to the BBC in 2014 that AI could "spell the end of the human race" was in response to a question about potentially revamping the voice technology he relied on. He told the BBC that very basic forms of AI had already proven powerful but creating systems that rival human intelligence or surpass it could be disastrous for the human race.

"It would take off on its own and re-design itself at an ever-increasing rate," he said.

BIAS, DEATHS, AUTONOMOUS CARS: EXPERT SAYS AI 'INCIDENTS' WILL DOUBLE AS SILICON VALLEY LAUNCHES TECH RACE

"Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete and would be superseded," Hawking added.

Months after his death, Hawking’s final book hit the market. Titled "Brief Answers to the Big Questions," his book provided readers with answers to questions he was frequently asked. The science book hashed out Hawking’s argument against the existence of God, how humans will likely live in space one day and his fears over genetic engineering and global warming.

Artificial intelligence also took a top spot on his list of "big questions," arguing that computers are "likely to overtake humans in intelligence" within 100 years.

"We may face an intelligence explosion that ultimately results in machines whose intelligence exceeds ours by more than ours exceeds that of snails," he wrote.

He argued that computers need to be trained to align with human goals, adding that not taking the risks associated with AI seriously could potentially be "our worst mistake ever."

TECH EXPERT WARNS AI COULD THREATEN HUMAN CONNECTIVITY, ROMANCE: 'LATEST VERSION OF A LONG TRADITION'

"It's tempting to dismiss the notion of highly intelligent machines as mere science fiction, but this would be a mistake — and potentially our worst mistake ever."

Hawking’s remarks echo concerns this year from tech giant Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in a letter released in March. The two tech leaders, along with thousands of other experts, signed a letter that called for an at least six-month pause on building AI systems more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4 chatbot.

"AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity, as shown by extensive research and acknowledged by top AI labs," reads the letter, published by nonprofit Future of Life.

STEPHEN HAWKING'S FINAL PAPER REVEALED

OpenAI's ChatGPT became the fastest-growing user base with 100 million monthly active users in January as people across the world rushed to use the chatbot, which simulates human-like conversations based on prompts it is given. The lab released the latest iteration of the platform, GPT-4, in March.

Despite calls to pause research at AI labs that are working on tech that would surpass GPT-4, the release of the system served as a watershed moment that reverberated across the tech industry and catapulted various companies to compete on building their own AI systems.

STEPHEN HAWKING SAYS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE COULD 'DESTROY' HUMANITY

Google is working to overhaul its search engine and even create a new one that relies on AI; Microsoft has rolled out the "new Bing" search engine described as users’ "AI-powered copilot for the web"; and Musk said he will launch a rival AI system that he described as "maximum truth-seeking."

Hawking advised in the year prior to his death that the world needed to "learn how to prepare for, and avoid, the potential risks" associated with AI, arguing that the systems "could be the worst event in the history of our civilization." He did note, however, that the future is still unknown and AI could prove beneficial for humanity if trained correctly.

"Success in creating effective AI could be the biggest event in the history of our civilization. Or the worst. We just don’t know. So, we cannot know if we will be infinitely helped by AI, or ignored by it and sidelined, or conceivably destroyed by it," Hawking said during a speech at the Web Summit technology conference in Portugal in 2017.

Most people make this major mistake sharing photos

You meet someone new on a dating app., then take the conversation to text messages. Things are going well, and you send a picture of the sunrise one morning. Harmless, right? Boom! You may have just given away your exact location.

Our tech stores all kinds of tidbits about where we are, what we’re doing, when we’re doing it, you name it. Suspect someone is cheating? Tech leaves those breadcrumbs, too.

Our apps and services are tracking where we are, too. You can put a stop to that.

AMERICANS ARE BUYING INTO AI HYPER, BUT ONE US REGION ISN'T CONVINCED: STUDY

While you’re at it, let’s make sure you’re not giving away more than you bargained for via your pics.

Every time you snap a picture, your phone stores metadata. That includes details like the device you took it on, your camera settings, the data and where you took it. This is also known as EXIF data.

Sending someone a picture you took at a public place? Not a huge deal. What about when you have sent picture after picture from the same location? Anyone who knows how to access this info now knows where you live.

To stop location sharing on iPhone:

It’s a pain to do this for every picture, so you can also disable this location tracking in your camera altogether.

On Android, here’s how to wipe a single photo:

To disable your location from photos for good, do this:

By default, the major social media sites strip out photo metadata when you upload. Hey look, there’s one thing they’re doing for our privacy.

Don't worry about someone downloading your pictures from Instagram or Twitter. They won't find any hidden details.

Boats are learning to fly above the water – here's how

The boating industry is focused on developing all sorts of new technologies and designs to make boats faster, more efficient, and delivering the smoothest ride on the roughest chop. Two new boats are real standouts, and here's why.

First, there's the Candela C-8 hydrofoil speedboat made by Candela, a company from Sweden. It is an impressive 28-foot boat that uses hydrofoils to float out of the water and fly above the waves. Just looking at the picture of it at top speed looks almost like a photoshopped image.

Rest assured, it's real. What's also unique about this boat is that it significantly lowers the amount of gas that a regular speedboat would burn. The typical combustion engine is replaced by a 69kWh Polestar battery and a small, torpedo-shaped direct drive motor that remains completely underwater.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S FREE CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

This means that the boat will use the same amount of energy when the engine starts as when it reaches a main body of water and flies at top speed. It sells for a whopping $390,000 and has a 100% carbon fiber hull.

The second boat is called the WaveFlyer Volaré and was made by the French boating company Electro Nautic. This boat is smaller than some jet skis, however, it can hover over the water so smoothly that you'll hardly feel it moving when you go for a ride. It seats 2 people side-by-side and is equipped with a 7-inch digital dash and a control joystick.

It rides less than 27.6 inches above the surface. It uses a combination of electric propulsion units at the back of its retractable foils and an active stability control system, using up to 75% less power than a conventional boat hull.

HOW DRONES ARE REVOLUTIONIZING DELIVERY BY TAKING TO THE SKIES

One of the best reasons for the creation of these boats is to reduce the amount of pollution in our seas. We've all heard about how at-risk our environment is, so any amount of pollution and carbon emission reduction is a good thing in my eyes. Plus, these boats run way smoother than a regular boat ever could, even on super choppy water days.

Of course, with all good things comes a downside, and in this case, these boats are typically more expensive than the average boat because of the materials they use. I mentioned before that the Candela C-8 hydrofoil speedboat is worth about $390,000, while the base model of the WaveFlyer Volaré starts at about $49,990. Other models will sell for as high as $59,990, so it's no secret that these boats are on the pricier side.

ELECTRIC CARGO BIKE AIMS TO REPLACE YOUR SUV

If you're thinking about whether to buy one of these boats, there are a few things to consider. Keep in mind how safe and smooth the ride is. And let's not forget how much fun it is flying even if a few feet above the water.

Army grounds aviation units for training after helicopter crashes

The Army has grounded aviation units for training following deadly helicopter crashes in Alaska and Kentucky.

The military branch said Friday that the suspension of air operations was effective immediately.

Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Terence Kelley said units were grounded until they complete training, according to The Associated Press. The training for active-duty units is slated to take place between May 1-5, and Army National Guard and Reserve units will have until May 31.

"The move grounds all Army aviators, except those participating in critical missions, until they complete the required training," the Army said in a statement.

ARMY SENDS INVESTIGATORS AFTER FATAL ALASKA HELICOPTER CRASH

The crashes killed 12 in the past month and two Army helicopters collided near Healy, Alaska, on Thursday – killing three and injuring a fourth. Their names were not immediately released.

Military investigators were expected to arrive at the crash site by Saturday.

ARMY IDENTIFIES FORT CAMPBELL HELICOPTER CRASH VICTIMS, PROBE UNDERWAY

This comes after nine soldiers were killed in March when two U.S. Army Black Hawk medical evacuation helicopters crashed during routine evening craning northeast of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

That crash also remains under investigation, but The Associated Press said the Army noted there is "no indication of any pattern between the two mishaps."

In February, two soldiers were hurt when an Apache helicopter rolled after taking off from Talkeetna. It was traveling to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage from Fort Wainwright.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Russian ransomware attack software targets Apple Mac and MacBook

One of the most well-known ransomware attack tools has now begun attacking Mac computers. This alarming news came from a tweet posted by MalwareHunterTeam warning Mac users. Let's dive into what this ransomware does and how you can protect yourself.

LockBit, a type of ransomware, is one of the first known instances of this malware targeting Mac computers. It is also one of the most widely-used ransomware known today, and its creators are offering cybercriminals this ransomware as a service, which allows various hacking groups to use it for a price.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S FREE CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

As of now, the cybercriminals with LockBit are mostly attacking big businesses by infiltrating their systems and encrypting their sensitive files. Most recently, they have gone after SpaceX by breaching one of their suppliers and stealing data. They have also recently gone after SickKids, a hospital in Canada for sick children. LockBit is believed to be an organization run by Russians, however, it is likely being run in the U.S. or China.

Although LockBit has been around for a few years, it has not advanced much when it comes to attacking Macs. Most of its attacks happen on Windows systems. The Mac version, which has been labeled "locker_Apple_M1_64", still seems to be a work in progress because it typically crashes as soon as it's launched, and it relies on an invalid signature.

MORE: RANSOMWARE GROUPS ARE ON THE PROWL: COULD YOU BE THEIR NEXT TARGET?

Plus, Apple still has its Gatekeeper protections, which can still prevent LockBit from being run even if it's downloaded and launched on a device.

For now, all you Mac users can cautiously take a breath of relief as LockBit doesn't seem to have much figured out yet when it comes to attacking personal Mac computers. However, it can never hurt to take the extra step to protect yourself.

Here are some of my suggestions for guarding yourself against ransomware.

This story is yet another reminder to always have good antivirus software running on your devices. Antivirus software can warn you against ransomware attacks and prevent you from clicking on any suspicious links or opening any weird attachments that might infect your Mac.

FREE ANTIVIRUS: SHOULD YOU USE IT?

If you receive an email from an address you do not recognize, don't open it. If you open it by mistake, avoid clicking any links or opening any attachments within the email. This is a classic method that cybercriminals use to try to trick you into thinking that the message is from someone important.

Apple regularly updates all its devices, including phones, tablets, and computers, so that its customers always have the best protection possible. Make sure the software on your Mac device has the latest version installed by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

It's great to have all your documents stored on your computer, however, you want to make sure they are all stored in more than one place just in case your computer gets hacked. I would recommend having either a USB flash drive or an external hard drive that you can keep locked away in a private place. Learn how to back up your Mac computer here

What is Google Bard? How the AI chatbot works, how to use it, and why it's controversial

Bard is one of the newest artificial intelligence chatbots. The AI chatbot, created by Google, was released in March 2023, after an initial announcement in February. The software was released to a limited amount of users for testing.

The chatbot comes on the heels of the release of one of its major competitors, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and has very similar functions to that model.

Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions about the new AI chatbot and how it functions.

GOOGLE CEO ADMITS HE, EXPERTS 'DON'T FULLY UNDERSTAND' HOW AI WORKS

Google Bard is an AI chatbot that creates answers to questions and responses to prompts given by the user.

Because the AI software is in its initial stages, there isn’t much information available about it on the website.

On the Google Bard website, you can find a link to join the waitlist for the program and two short quotes about the AI software. One of the quotes describes Bard and what its goal is.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF AI?

"Meet Bard: your creative and helpful collaborator, here to supercharge your imagination, boost your productivity, and bring your ideas to life," the website states.

There is also a disclaimer that reminds users that this it is in the experimental stages, and the accuracy of Bard’s answers could be flawed.

"Bard is an experiment and may give inaccurate or inappropriate responses. You can help make Bard better by leaving feedback," the website explains.

Already since its release, there has been a major controversy in regard to an inaccuracy in one of Bard’s answers.

CHEATING WITH CHATGPT? STUDENTS DISH ON TEMPTATIONS OF AI IN THE CLASSROOM

In its short time in user’s hands, Google Bard has already been no stranger to controversy.

Google released a video on social media showing an example of how Bard works in February.

In the video, Bard is asked "What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope can I tell my 9-year-old about?"

Bard then provided a list of three facts, one of which was factually incorrect.

One of the "facts" provided about the telescope was that it was the first to take a picture of an "exoplanet," which is a planet outside our solar system, according to Dictionary.com. The fact is that the first photos of this nature were taken in 2004 by the Very Large Telescope (VLT), which was operated by the European Southern Observatory, according to NASA.

WHAT ARE THE FOUR MAIN TYPES OF ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE? FIND OUT HOW FUTURE AI PROGRAMS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

After the video went public, Google Bard's parent company, Alphabet, lost a hundred billion dollars in market value in just a single day, according to Search Engine Journal.

When chatbots get things wrong, these errors are often known as "hallucinations."

Google Bard is powered by Language Model for Dialogue Applications, or LaMDA. The AI "draws information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses," Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in a Google blog post.

Google Bard uses both public dialogue and web data in order to answer questions, according to Search Engine Journal.

Since Google Bard is still in the experimental phase, its release has started on a small scale and access has been limited.

In order to gain access to Google Bard since its March 2023 release, individuals have been required to join a waitlist through the website.

Based on the information provided on the Google Bard site, there is yet to be an official release and the waitlist is still the only way to gain access to the software.

The original release that is currently available is a "lightweight" and "smaller" model, Pichai said in the post, as it is for testing purposes and to gain feedback from users.

Say goodbye to pedaling with these e-bikes of 2023

E-bikes are becoming some of the most popular ways to get around due to their convenience and speedy effortless ride. They’re also cost effective and come in different shapes, sizes and styles. What I also love about them is you will never get exhausted pedaling around town again.

Many e-bike lovers claim there are savings at the gas pump by using an e-bike for quick errands instead of a car.

When considering purchasing an e-bike, some of the factors to consider include the type of terrain you will be riding on, the distance you will be covering, your budget and battery life.

Some of the top features to look for in an e-bike include a powerful motor, a long-lasting quality battery that has gained certification from the likes Underwriters Labs (UL), a durable frame and a comfortable seat.

Here are the top-rated e-bikes of 2023, starting with the chunky fat good Heybike.

The Tyson model from Heybike was awarded one of the best of CES 2023 and was recently released to the public. It’s foldable, has a 55-mile range, can handle up to 400 pounds, and only takes 4-5 hours to charge. It uses hydraulic disc brakes, meaning braking is easy no matter where you’re riding, and the bike itself is energy efficient. Pricing for the bike starts at just under $1,700. At the time of publication, the Heybike had a 5-star rating on its website.

ELECTRIC CARGO BIKE AIMS TO REPLACE YOUR SUV

The Gocycle G4 is an award-winning e-bike that will cost you a lot more than some of the others on the market. However, it’s one of my favorites as well. It has about a 40-mile range, plus it folds into a stowaway shape you can store in a lot of places a bike would never fit. It comes with a USB plug, so you can charge your phone on your ride, and its motor makes for a smooth and quiet ride. Depending on the model, it can cost you between $5,400 and $7,000. At the time of publication, this product had a 4.3-star rating on Google.

The Pace 500.2 from Aventon comes in a step-through model, which means you can easily get your leg over the bike to start your ride. It has a cushy seat and upright frame and goes up to 47 miles depending on your speed. This bike will run you a little under $1,400, making it the most affordable and accessible option for anyone looking to get on an e-bike. At the time of publishing, the Pace 500.2 had a 4.7-star rating on its website.

SEAGLIDER TAKES OFF: ANOTHER MAJOR AIRLINE JOINS THE PUSH FOR BATTERY-POWERED WATER FLIGHTS

Investing in an electric bike can be a game-changer for your daily commute. With their convenience, eco-friendliness and cost-effectiveness, it's no wonder they're becoming increasingly popular. Whether you're looking for power, durability or comfort, these top e-bikes are worth considering.

No matter which e-bike you may end up with, never store or recharge an e-bike near the entrance or exit to your home or office due to the risk of fire. Always inspect the condition of the battery and get any damaged battery repaired or discarded properly without delay. Using incorrect chargers and poorly made or damaged batteries can lead to catastrophic fires.

Troubling malware threat spreading on Facebook and Twitter

A new kind of malware attack is spreading like wildfire on social media, including Facebook, and through posts on Twitter. There have already been an estimated 500,000 infections worldwide, according to researchers at Guardio Labs.

More recently, there is a noticeable surge of fake campaigns on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter where infected promoted posts and ads are deliberately posted to install malware when you click on them.

This troubling new method of spreading malware is known as 'Malverposting'. Here's what we know about it.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S FREE CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH SECURITY ALERTS, QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

Malverposting happens when someone uses promoted social media posts and tweets to spread malicious software and other security threats. The way these scammers work is by paying for ads that will boost their malicious posts so that more people see them and then fall for their malware scam.

HOW SCAMMERS ARE SELLING COUNTERFEIT STAMPS ON FACEBOOK ADS

Many of these posts contain content that will bait you into believing that they're real. Some will be fake ads for clothing or electronics being sold for super cheap prices, while others will try to convince you to invest in a fake scam or download an app that is actually fake.

One particular campaign that has been gaining traction over the last few months is happening on Facebook. It works by creating new fake business profiles and hijacks real profiles that have large followings. With these profiles, it overwhelms people's Facebook feeds with malicious click-baits promising adult-rated photo album downloads for free.

When a victim clicks on the post from this campaign, a malicious ZIP file is downloaded to their computers. The ZIP file contains tons of "photos" that, when clicked, will initiate the process of releasing malware onto the device being used.

The malware will then secretly copy the user's sessions, cookies, accounts, crypto-wallets and more, and send the information from their computer or device to the scammer without the user's knowledge. This can severely hurt the users who fall for the bait, and it also deeply hurts the legitimate business profiles whose information gets compromised and essentially halts their business from flourishing in a social media setting.

FREE ANTIVIRUS: SHOULD YOU USE IT?

There are a few steps you can take to make sure that you do not fall for a fake scam on social media. Here are some of my tips:

Look closely at the language of the post. The language of a post is a lot more important than you think. If you look closely and notice that a post is trying very hard to push a product on people by using insanely low prices that won't be found anywhere else (like a laptop being sold for $20 for example), then that's a huge red flag for a scam.

Stop if you see urgent messages from a "friend" asking for money. It could be a hacker behind that post, pretending to be your friend.

Check out a company before you buy. Do a quick online search for the store’s name, and look for reviews and complaints from other customers. You should also check the Better Business Bureau website to see if the store has a rating or any complaints. If you see a lot of negative reviews and comments, don’t trust them.

Don’t deal with a vendor requiring cryptocurrency, gift card, or wire transfer payment. That’s sure to be a scam.

DESPERATELY NEED FACEBOOK HELP? DON'T FALL FOR THIS SCAM

Have good antivirus software on all your devices. This story is also another reminder to always have good antivirus software running on your devices, as these social media scams can entail the victim clicking on a fake post. Antivirus software on your devices will stop you from clicking on any potential malicious links in social media posts.

See my expert review of the best antivirus protection for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devicesby visiting CyberGuy.com/LockUpYourTech

The team at Guardio did reach out to Meta (the parent company of Facebook) to make them aware of these alarming facts. According to the security group. Meta's research and engineering teams are actively working to stop the propagation on their ad network.

What are the dangers of AI? Find out why people are afraid of artificial intelligence

Many experts worry that the rapid development of artificial intelligence may have unforeseen disastrous consequences for humanity.

Machine learning technology is designed to assist humans in their everyday life and provide the world with open access to information.

However, the unregulated nature of AI in its current state could lead to harmful consequences for its users and the world as a whole. Read below to find out the risks of AI.

CHATGPT AND HEALTH CARE: COULD THE AI CHATBOT CHANGE THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE?

The emergence of artificial intelligence has led to feelings of uncertainty, fear, and hatred toward a technology that most people do not fully understand. AI can automate tasks that previously only humans could complete, such as writing an essay, organizing an event, and learning another language. However, experts worry that the era of unregulated AI systems may create misinformation, cyber-security threats, job loss, and political bias.

For instance, AI systems can articulate complex ideas coherently and quickly due to large data sets and information. However, the information used by AI to generate responses tends to be incorrect because of the inability of AI to distinguish valid data. The open-access usage of these AI systems may further promote this misinformation in academic papers, articles, and essays.

In addition, the algorithms that compose the operational capabilities of artificial intelligence are built by humans with certain political and social biases. If humanity becomes reliant on AI to seek out information, then these systems could screw research in a way that benefits one side of the political aisle. Certain AI chat programs, such as ChatGPT, have faced allegations of operating with a liberal bias by refusing to generate information about Hunter Biden's laptop scandal.

Artificial intelligence poses many advantages to humans, including streamlining simple and complex everyday tasks, and can act as a ready-to-go 24/7 assistant; however, AI does have the potential to get out of control. One of the dangers of AI is its ability to be weaponized by corporate entities or governments to restrict the rights of the public. For example, AI has the capability of using the data of facial recondition technology to track the location of individuals and families. China's government regularly uses this technology to target protesters and those advocating against regime policies.

Moreover, artificial intelligence offers a wide range of advantages to the financial industry by advising investors on market decisions. Companies use AI algorithms to help build models that predict future market volatility and when to buy or sell stocks. However, algorithms do not use the same context that humans use when making market decisions and do not understand the fragility of the everyday economy.

AI DATA LEAK CRISIS: NEW TOOL PREVENTS COMPANY SECRETS FROM BEING FED TO CHATGPT

AI could complete thousands of trades within a day to help boost profits but may contribute to the next market crash by scaring investors. Financial institutions need to have a deep understanding of the algorithms of these programs to ensure there are safety nets to stop AI from overselling stocks.

Religious and political leaders have also noted how the rapid development of machine learning technology can lead to a degradation of morals and cause humanity to become completely reliant on artificial intelligence. Tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT may be used by college students to forge essays, thus making academic dishonesty easier for millions of people. Meanwhile, jobs that once gave individuals purpose and fulfillment, as well as a means of living, could be erased overnight as AI continues to accelerate in public life.

Artificial intelligence can lead to invasion of privacy, social manipulation, and economic uncertainty. But another aspect to consider is how the rapid, everyday use of AI can lead to discrimination and socioeconomic struggles for millions of people. Machine learning technology collects a trove of data on users, including information that financial institutions and government agencies may use against you.

A common example is a car insurance company raising your premiums based on how many times an AI program has tracked you using your phone while driving. In the employment arena, companies may use AI hiring programs to filter out the qualities they want in the candidates. This may exclude people of color and individuals with fewer opportunities.

The most dangerous element to consider with artificial intelligence is that these programs do not make decisions based on the same emotional or social context as humans. Although AI may be used and created with good intentions, it could lead to the unforeseen dangers of discrimination, privacy abuse, and rampant political bias.

AI likened to gun debate as college students stand at tech crossroads

Artificial intelligence is changing the game on education as many students and even professors embrace platforms such as ChatGPT for classwork. Other students, however, are shunning the tech for school, citing the risks of getting caught using the platforms outweigh the benefits.

OpenAI released ChatGPT, a chatbot that can mimic human conversations based on prompts it is given, in November, and it quickly became the fastest-growing user base with 100 million monthly active users in January. With the release of the tech came concerns from some educators, ranging from grade schools to the college level, that students would use the platform to plagiarize or cheat.

Some college students report they are policing themselves away from using artificial intelligence to complete coursework.

"I’ve never seen actually anybody get caught with it. I don’t think students want to take that risk," a freshman at Arizona State University told Fox 10 about using ChatGPT for college assignments.

CHEATING WITH CHATGPT? STUDENTS DISH ON TEMPTATIONS OF AI IN THE CLASSROOM

Another freshman added, "One of my professors talked about it. He just said, ‘Don’t cheat, because you got to be responsible, because you got to understand what’s at risk.’"

ChatGPT is trained by retaining text from all across the internet and using that information in its responses to humans. Students who use the tech to complete classwork risk possible misinformation – the system can "hallucinate" and give answers that seem correct but are not – and even plagiarize.

AMERICANS ARE BUYING INTO AI HYPE, BUT ONE US REGION ISN'T CONVINCED: STUDY

College students surveyed by College Rover reported that 36% of their professors threatened to fail them if they were caught using AI for coursework. Some 29% of students surveyed said their college has issued guidance on AI. The majority of students, 60%, said they don’t believe their school should outright ban AI technologies.

Though some students appear to resist the tech over potential risks, many professors and colleges are actively integrating AI platforms into classes.

Sam Scarpino, director of AI + Life Sciences at Northeastern University, told Fox News Digital that ChatGPT is "already commonplace" on campus and that using the tech helps set students up for success in their future professions.

"Being able to use technology like ChatGPT while ensuring that you have rewarding, meaningful employment is exactly what Northeastern is training its students to do," Scarpino said. "Our faculty embraces this challenge, and that’s exactly why ChatGPT is not a big deal at Northeastern. It’s just one of many pieces of technology our instructors bring into the classroom."

BIAS, DEATHS, AUTONOMOUS CARS: EXPERT SAYS AI 'INCIDENTS' WILL DOUBLE AS SILICON VALLEY LAUNCHES TECH RACE

Scarpino said professors across the college "are using ChatGPT to reinforce their pedagogy," pointing to examples of how some philosophy classes employ the technology to narrate arguments between "long-dead scholars."

"As many may have experienced, ChatGPT does not make many grammatical mistakes but tends to churn out rather bland, vague text – a fatal flaw for some fields," he explained. "Our goal at the Institute for Experimental AI, and Northeastern more broadly, is to embrace technology and human-centered design to train, as our president, Joseph Aoun, said, a ‘robot-proof generation.’ For us, there was no pivot to ChatGPT and no need for concern."

Gen Z, defined by the U.S. Census as people born between 1997 and 2013, uses ChatGPT more than any other generation, with more than 6 in 10 Gen Zers who say they use the tech regularly, a study from WordFinder found. That generation also makes up the majority of people currently enrolled in college.

The study from College Rover found that 41% of college students use ChatGPT a few times a week, while 10% of students use the platform once a day and 9% multiple times a day.

College students use ChatGPT the most for English studies at 21%, followed by mathematics at 17% and social sciences at 15%, according to the study that surveyed more than 1,000 students.

COLLEGE STUDENTS OPEN UP ABOUT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE CLASSROOM: 'EVERYONE IS USING CHATGPT'

Christopher Alexander, the chief communications officer at Liberty Blockchain, compared AI to firearms: It can be beneficial if used properly but comes with great risks if misused.

"AI is a tool, like a firearm. When used properly and with forethought, it can protect people. If misused, great harm can occur," Alexander said.

He said that when curricula for college students focuses on memorization and "regurgitation of facts," artificial intelligence "will just be a crutch."

"The failure is ultimately in teaching students to solve problems and think creatively more than the tool, and academicians are probably going to have to reconsider how they teach in the future. But AI can’t think for you, it can only compile data. Data has to be transformed into understanding by the student either way. That is what students and teachers need to keep in mind as they navigate this new frontier."

Google’s Dark Side: 5 search terms to avoid at all costs

Ever Google search for coupon or promo codes? You’ll probably waste 15 minutes putting in codes that don’t work. At worst, you’ll end up on a malware-infected site. Use these proven tricks to save money instead.

Streaming is expensive, so you might be tempted to look up free TV shows or movies. Don’t do it. There are seriously sketchy sites out there. I put together a list of ways to get free movies and shows you can trust.

It doesn’t end there — not even close. How can a simple Google search be dangerous? Keep reading.

SEO poisoning and scammy ads

Google anything and you get pages of search results. At the very top are the "Sponsored Results." These are paid ads businesses use to drive traffic to their websites.

Google doesn’t vet everyone who buys an ad. Cybercrooks can buy ads just like trustworthy companies — except they hide nasty malware on their sites. Scammers are getting good at SEO, so their malicious search results are at the top of the organic results.

So, what terms should you avoid? Sadly, there’s a whole lot. Let’s focus on five that could do some real damage.

1. Free credit report

There are legitimate ways to get a free credit report. But cybercriminals go after the juiciest search terms and think about all they can get their hands on if you think it’s a site you can trust.

The federal Fair Credit Reporting Act requires the three credit reporting agencies (Transunion, Experian, and Equifax) to provide U.S. consumers with a free annual credit report. There are a variety of ways you can request a copy of your annual report from each agency:

Online: www.AnnualCreditReport.com

Phone: 1-877-FACTACT (1-877-322-8882)

If you want to send by mail, download and complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form, then send it to:

Annual Credit Report Request Service

P.O. Box 105281

Atlanta, GA 30348-5281

If you submit your request via phone or mail, your credit report will be mailed to you within 15 days once the paperwork is received.

2. Tech support phone numbers

Fake numbers are a classic. If scammers can figure out how to get your bank’s name to appear when they call, you can bet they can get their numbers high in searches.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD ALERT? HERE’S HOW CROOKS SWIPE YOUR PAYMENT CARD DETAILS

Here are a few of the most searched:

For more tech company numbers and support sites if you prefer to contact online, go here

3. How to make money online

On my national radio show, I get so many questions about whether an amazing money-making opportunity is real. Almost always, my answer is no.

There is certainly money to be made at home, but if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Some companies offer awesome employee perks or high pay — but good jobs are hard to find. If one falls out of the virtual sky with more pay or perks than you'd get with a similar position with another company, be skeptical.

Also, be wary of contract or part-time jobs that come with many unusual perks. This could be a part-time office support job you're doing remotely with a surprisingly generous bonus compensation plan or a job offering you a much more flexible schedule than expected.

Here are nine more signs a job offer is bogus so you don’t get scammed.

4. Free people search

People finder, people search, people lookup — no matter what you call these sites, they are notorious for ripping people off.

You’re curious about a new love interest, business contact, or old friend. There are (free) ways to dig up dirt, but these sites are simply trying to reel you into an expensive subscription.

What to do instead?

Check out publicly-available info like government documents, arrest records and property information.

Do a thorough Google search. There’s an art to this. Try these steps.

Pro tip: Your info is likely on many scummy people search sites. You can wipe it out. I have a series of how-to articles, Opt-out Tuesday, to help you wipe your personal details.

5. Crypto wallet

Have some money in crypto or trying to get in while prices are low? That search is not the way to find a wallet to store your digital currency. It’s a road to disaster.

When you buy cryptocurrency on an exchange like Coinbase, a wallet is created for you — one that the exchange controls. This is called a custodial wallet. To move your crypto, buy things with it or stake it to earn money, you need to move to a self-custody wallet. That means you have complete control over the wallet and everything inside it. It also means people are more at risk of being scammed out of their funds.

Pro tip: Every wallet has a "seed phrase" made up of typically 12 to 24 random-seeming words. Never, ever give this out. It is the key to open your wallet from any device.

Here on my site, we list a few of the most popular wallets and the correct links to download them.

10 USEFUL MAC KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS YOU NEED TO KNOW

This is perhaps the most popular way that scammers like to get information out of you. The emails can be carefully designed to look legitimate by claiming to be from an important institute like your bank or the government.

Urgent language will typically be used, saying that you must act quickly to make sure that you do not get in any kind of trouble. They will ensure you that by clicking a link or opening an attachment and giving away your personal information, like your credit card number, you will be safe from further consequences.

Although public WiFi networks are convenient, they also can pose a great danger to your privacy. Using a network available in a place like an airport or a coffee shop can put your information at risk to a scammer who was able to hack into the network and monitor it. Take caution before you decide to sign onto a WiFi Network that isn't private.

5 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU CAN DO ON AN ANDROID

This is why these institutions have cybersecurity teams regularly monitoring and testing out their security features so that malicious hackers cannot get through.

This is a more old-fashioned approach; however, it can still work like a charm for a scammer. If you receive anything in the mail with your credit card number and throw it away without ripping it up or shredding it, a criminal can search through your trash and easily locate the information.

Criminals have also been known to bug ATMs with devices that gather your card information when you insert or swipe your card, which is why you should always be super cautious before using a public one that isn't connected to your bank.

There are numerous steps you can take to make sure that your credit card information is never stolen or compromised. Here are some tips to keep in mind for the future.

DALLE-2 VS. BING CREATOR – WHICH COMES OUT ON TOP IN THIS AI SHOWDOWN?

If you receive an email or phone call from someone you don't know and they want your credit card information, do not give it to them. Also, remember that legit institutions like your bank or any government branch will never ask for this information over the phone or through email and will only send you letters in the mail.

When you get your credit card statement, make sure you go through every transaction and verify that each one was performed by you.

If you have trash mail that you're throwing away that has important information on it, make sure you shred it or tear it up into small pieces before tossing it.

If you're paying for something online, make sure that the website URL starts with "https." This will verify that the website is legit.

VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) will protect your information when you're using a public WiFi network. A VPN encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a secure server, which can help prevent third-party websites, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), or hackers from intercepting your online data.

Artificial intelligence: Frequently asked questions about AI

The advancement of artificial intelligence is progressing at a breakneck pace. While the technology is changing rapidly, the basic principles behind AI aren't new.

Artificial intelligence has been around for many years, and has been built upon by many different developers. Today, some of the most well known AIs include chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Bard, with many more to come.

These AIs have become more sophisticated and refined over the course of many iterations. These advancements are bringing AI to levels reaching what would be considered "strong AI," a machine that essentially has the same capabilities as a human mind.

Following are links to articles that answer some of the most-asked questions about AI.

AI, or artificial intelligence, is a branch of computer science that is designed to understand and store human intelligence, mimic human capabilities including the completion of tasks, process human language and perform speech recognition. AI is the leading innovation in technology today and its primary goal is to eliminate tedious tasks and assist in immediately accessing extremely detailed and hyper-focused information and data.

The four main types of AI are reactive machines, limited memory, theory of mind and self-awareness. The most basic forms of AI are reactive machines and limited memory. Theory of mind and self-awareness are two stages in AI that are theoretical as of now, as they are still being developed. In the future, these two forms of AI could be among us. For a machine to reach the self-awareness stage of development, the most complex stage, it would need to possess the ability to form its own identity and become self-aware, as the name of the stage implies.

While there are many recent developments in the AI field, the premise of it is not new, and the history of AI dates back to before chatbots. Some of the earliest names in AI were Alan Turing, who created the Turing machine, Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts, who expanded upon Turing’s ideas and John McCarthy, who coined the term "artificial intelligence."

OpenAI rolls out new ChatGPT features including ability to go incognito

Artificial intelligence leader OpenAI has introduced the ability to turn off chat history in its popular chatbot ChatGPT.

In a Tuesday blog post, the company said conversations that are started when chat history is disabled will not be used to train and improve its models and will not appear in the history sidebar.

The controls are found in the ChatGPT settings and can be changed at any time.

The mode rolled out ot all users.

AI DATA LEAK CRISIS: NEW TOOL PREVENTS COMPANY SECRETS FROM BEING FED TO CHATGPT

"We hope this provides an easier way to manage your data than our existing opt-out process," the San Francisco-based startup said. "When chat history is disabled, we will retain new conversations for 30 days and review them only when needed to monitor for abuse, before permanently deleting."

In addition, OpenAI is working on a new ChatGPT Business subscription for professionals who need more control over their data as well as enterprises seeking to manage their end users. It will be available in the coming months and ChatGPT Business will follow API data usage polices. OpenAI says that means end users' data will not be used to train its models by default.

Microsoft Corp, which has invested in the company, already offers ChatGPT to businesses.

Mira Murati, OpenAI's chief technology officer, told Reuters that service would appeal to the cloud provider's existing customers.

AI TECH CAN CRACK COMMON PASSWORDS WITH STUNNING SPEED, RESEARCHERS FIND

Lastly, OpenAI detailed a new Export option in settings to make it easier to export ChatGPT data. Users will receive a file with conversations and all other relevant data in email.

While Murtai said that user information has helped make software more reliable, she said there are still challenges to undertake.

Murati told the outlet the new features arose from a months-long effort to put users "in the driver's seat" regarding data collection.

"We'll be moving more and more in this direction of prioritizing user privacy," Murati explained, with the goal that "it’s completely eyes off and the models are super aligned: they do the things that you want to do."

She told The Associated Press in an interview posted Monday that AI systems should be regulated, and that "a lot more needs to happen."

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

What is AI?

AI, or artificial intelligence, is a branch of computer science that is designed to understand and store human intelligence, mimic human capabilities including the completion of tasks, process human language and perform speech recognition. AI is the leading innovation in technology today and its primary goal is to eliminate tedious tasks and assist in immediately accessing extremely detailed and hyper-focused information and data.

AI has the ability to consume and process massive datasets and develop patterns to make predictions for the completion of future tasks.

While the interest in AI around the world is growing, the science poses an existential crisis for jobs, companies, whole industries and potentially human existence. In March, Goldman Sachs released a report and warned the public of the threat to jobs that AI, and ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by AI research company OpenAI, poses. The report revealed that jobs with repetitive responsibilities and some manual labor are at risk for automation. The report concludes that 300 million jobs could be affected by AI.

TWO-THIRDS OF US JOBS COULD BE EXPOSED TO AI-DRIVEN AUTOMATION: GOLDMAN SACHS

In simple terms, artificial intelligence is computer science that is capable of completing tasks that humans already perform or require human intelligence to complete.

AI uses technology to learn and recreate human tasks. Currently, in some situations, AI has the ability to perform human tasks better than we do which poses a threat to the workforce.

While it may seem AI has only recently become popular or relevant to society, it has been used in many ways for years.

Reactive machines are task specific and a basic form of AI. They react to the input provided to them and offer the same output. In the form of reactive machines, AI does not learn new concepts. These machines apply datasets and respond with recommendations based on already existing inputs.

An example of reactive machines is the recommendations section in Netflix. whereby TV shows and movies are recommended by the streaming service to a user based on their search and watch history.

FIVE DISTURBING EXAMPLES OF WHY AI IS NOT QUITE THERE

Limited memory understands by storing previously captured and learned data and builds knowledge for the future based on its findings. An example of limited memory is self-driving cars.

Self-driving cars use signals and sensors to detect their surroundings and make driving decisions. The cars compute where pedestrians, traffic signals and low-light conditions are to drive more cautiously and avoid accidents or traffic errors.

Theory of mind means that humans have thoughts, feelings, emotions, desires, etc. that impact their day-to-day behaviors and decisions. While early adaptations of AI struggled with theory of mind, it has since made astonishing improvements. In order for AI to procure theory of mind, it must understand that everyone has feelings and develop the ability to change their behaviors as humans do.

An example of theory of mind for humans is to see a wilted plant and understand that it needs to be watered in order to survive. In order for AI to have theory of mind, it will need to do the same.

AI, ChatGPT specifically, has passed a theory of mind test commensurate with 9-year-old ability, as of February 2023.

Finally, when AI is self-aware, the stages of development will be complete. Self-awareness for AI may be the most challenging of all AI types as the machines will have achieved human-level consciousness, emotions, empathy, etc. and can commiserate accordingly.

Once the machine has learned to be self-aware, it will have the ability to form its own identity.

This stage of self-awareness is not currently possible. In order for self-awareness to become a possibility, scientists will need to find a way to replicate consciousness in a machine.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE REMAINS A DANGEROUS MYTH

Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a coaching company in Chicago, found in an April report that ChatGPT could replace 4.8 million jobs in the future. Specifically, ChatGPT would replace jobs that are repetitive and predictable including copywriters, customer service representatives, cashiers, data clerks, drivers and more.

Individuals with graduate degrees are most fearful of losing their jobs to AI and nearly 69% of them emphasized their fear of it, according to a Tidio survey. While humans are becoming increasingly alarmed by AI, we are already using it in our daily lives in ways people might not even realize.

Here are some of the most popular and typical ways we’re already leveraging AI.

Facial recognition is being used mostly by law enforcement to identify criminals and assess potential threats. Individuals use it daily to access smart devices and through social media like Facebook photo tag recommendations.

Determining violations of community guidelines, facial recognition, and translation tools for language interpretation are just a few ways social media is operating alongside AI.

Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Apple Siri are all examples of voice assistants that employ AI. Voice assistants use natural language processing and are capable of discovering patterns and behaviors among users in order to conserve preferences and offer results to consumers. The more you use them, the more the voice assistant will learn.

Search engines like Google, Bing and Baidu use AI to improve search results for users. Recommended content based on initial search terms are provided to users every time they search. Search engines use natural language processing, a branch of AI, to recognize search intent in order to provide exemplary results.

For example, if you search for "rose" results for the pink wine rose, the flower rose, Rose the singer or rose the verb may appear. When you provide context to your search, AI assimilates and suggests results.

If you’re using Google to query "Marylin Monrow," the search engine giant suggests the correct search term and results for "Marilyn Monroe." Search engines are using AI to grasp spelling, context, language and more in order to best satisfy users.

AI is also the power behind the rapid adaptation of search results. Trillions of searches are performed every year and humans don’t have the ability to comb through results – but AI does.

When you come home from a long day at work to relax on the couch and throw on Netflix, you’re leveraging AI to help you choose the next TV show or movie you’ll watch. When you log onto Instagram or Facebook and a suggested list of new followers or friends appears, you’re experiencing the power of AI. When you open your Google Maps app and type "gas" into the search bar to locate the closest gas station near you, you’re using AI to make your life easier.

Dialogue Boost is a new feature that is being introduced within Amazon Prime Video that will allow you to select dialogue volume levels to suit your hearing needs on any device. The feature is initially being launched on Amazon Original shows and movies worldwide, and it will help you hear the dialogue much better over the background music and special effects happening on the content you are watching.
