Could AI race cars replace human drivers?

It is no secret that autonomous driving is rapidly becoming the way of the future. Amazon recently had its first test drive of the Zoox robotaxi, and it was a major success, so many are wondering if this will become the norm down the road.

As part of the 2023 International CES Convention that took place in January, the Indy Autonomous Challenge made its return to showcase some of the fastest autonomous race cars in the world.

The Indy Autonomous Challenge had its tournament aiming to push the boundaries of head-to-head autonomous racing and showcase the future of autonomous mobility at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

It featured nine teams from 17 universities spanning six different countries seeking to break autonomous racing world records. In the end, it was team PoliMOVE from Polytechnic University of Milan that ended up winning the whole thing.

HONDA TURNED THE CR-V INTO A SUPERCAPACITOR-POWERED ‘BEAST’

PoliMOVE reached a maximum speed of 180 mph, a new autonomous speed world record for a racetrack. The Indy Autonomous Challenge is hoping to continue serving as a platform for students who wish to excel in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. The autonomous racing group wants "to increase safety and performance in motorsports and across all modes of commercial transportation."

Proponents have a list of benefits from autonomous driving, which explains why they are being so rapidly accepted. One benefit is that they are a huge help to the environment.

Many vehicles are being specifically designed to be more environmentally sustainable, and one model called the Aero is even being built with high-efficiency particulate-absorbing filters that clear pollution from the air while they are on the road.

HOW HACKERS ARE USING CHATGPT TO CREATE MALWARE TO TARGET YOU

Another great benefit is that it could help shipping industries because they will not have to rely on human drivers working certain shifts. An autonomous vehicle can work around the clock while being monitored by teams from thousands of miles away. Plus, the removal of heavy road freight transport vehicles that use diesel gas will majorly help the environment as well.

There are even benefits when it comes to race car driving. The sport has always been a dangerous one for the drivers who get behind the wheel.

However, autonomous vehicles would allow race car driving fans to still enjoy the sport as these vehicles can drive potentially faster, better and more safely than any professional human driver. Those professional drivers will still be able to use the software to control their race cars in a race.

Although we may see fewer human driving jobs in the future, humans will still be needed to monitor and control these autonomous vehicles. This could ultimately create more jobs for people in the STEM world, which refers to four educational subject disciplines: science, technology, engineering and math.

RIVIAN TRUCKS AND MINIS ARE THE MOST SATISFYING ELECTRIC VEHICLES, STUDY FINDS

It could also encourage more young people to take up an interest in the field, like those students working for the Indy Autonomous Challenge.

So, yes, AI vehicles may very well be replacing human drivers. I just can't imagine enjoying a visit to the racetrack without the race car stars we know and love.

Don’t fall for these fake, malware-producing ChatGPT sites, apps

Everybody is talking about this biggest breakthrough in technology since the internet. ChatGPT has become one of the fastest-growing AI-powered chatbots since its release in November 2022.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

This new tech known as ChatGPT is designed to simulate human-like conversation and do the work as good if not better than humans in a variety of contexts such as customer service, education and entertainment.

It can understand and respond to a wide range of conversational topics and can be integrated into a variety of applications and platforms.

Since it has become so popular, however, hackers are taking full advantage and rapidly creating more and more scams to try to trick you into giving them access to your personal and private information.

5 BEST PET TRACKERS TO KEEP YOUR DOG OR CAT SAFE

Cybersecurity experts have been closely monitoring these hackers and have found that hundreds of domains on the internet are already using the term "ChatGPT" to fool people.

One researcher, Dominic Alvieri, shared some of his findings on his Twitter page. One thing he found was a website called "chat-gpt-pc.online", which is a site that tries to convince you to download ChatGPT from the site to use as a local application on their Windows computers.

Once downloaded, however, it would put RedLine information-stealing malware on your devices. This type of malware steals stored information in your applications. So, if you are someone who has Google Chrome store your passwords or credit card information, this malware can pull the data and send it to the hacker.

Tons of fake ChatGPT apps that use similar phishing scams have also been found in the Google Play Store.

The cybersecurity firm Cyble has just reported that they found more than 50 fake ChatGPT apps and that there is a download going around called "ChatGPT1" which uses SMS billing fraud to secretly subscribe its target to numerous paid services.

“Once you send that photo, you can’t take it back,” goes the warning to teenagers, often ignoring the reality that many teens send explicit images of themselves under duress, or without understanding the consequences. A new online tool aims to give some control back to teens, or people who were once teens, and take down explicit images and videos of themselves from the internet. 5 best pet trackers to keep your dog or cat safe

If you’re a pet owner and lover like me, you know there’s nothing more important than keeping your furry friend safe.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

As luck would find it, there have never been as many affordable options that make all the difference between a missing pet poster and being together safe and sound at home.

That’s why I recommend you invest in a pet tracker of some kind so you can always have peace of mind knowing where your pet is.

There are lots of pet trackers on the market, so before you make your choice, make sure the one you’re purchasing has all these features.

To help you narrow your search, here are my top 5 best pet tracking picks:

APPLE'S NEW TACTIC TO GET YOU TO BUY MORE IN A TOUGH ECONOMY

One of the best parts of using a tracker like an Apple AirTag is that you can turn on Lost Mode, and if someone else were to scan the AirTag, you can set up a message about contacting you. That’s why the Apple AirTag is my top pick for a pet tracker this year. Plus, you can pair it with the Pup Culture AirTag Dog Collar Holder.

It slides right onto the collar, so it’s not dangling around your pet’s neck. That's an important instruction to follow as there have been reports of pet owners saying their pooch has swallowed the coin-shaped AirTag tracker. Be mindful to use attachments to the collar that are strong and do not allow your dog or cat to reach it with their mouth.

The AirTag itself is extremely durable, and you get to use all the great features of an AirTag while knowing it’s safely attached to your pet. One drawback I wish Apple would work on is a feature that allows an AirTag owner to share the location with others in the family.

At the time of publishing, the Apple AirTag had over 99,000 global reviews on Amazon with 84% giving it 5 stars. While the Pup Culture AirTag Dog Collar Holder had over 4,8000 global reviews on Amazon with 83% giving it 5 stars at the time of publishing.

Apple's new tactic to get you to buy more in a tough economy

Don't think you can afford to plunk down a couple of grand for the latest MacBook Pro? How about spending north of a grand for a decked-out iPad Pro and iPhone Pro all while the country is being hit with inflationary pressures?

Apple says: Yes, you can.

The tech giant is currently working on multiple different projects and has been experiencing a few technical setbacks along the way.

One of the projects is the "Buy now, pay later" program, and it is expected to be a popular feature. It will also help the Cupertino-based tech leader push through a tough economy when otherwise sales would be expected to soften.

IS A FOLDING IPHONE ON THE WAY? APPLE JUST GRANTED NEW PATENT

A "pay later" program is a retail lifeline when consumers start to hold back on sizable purchases.

In late 2022, Apple announced it will release what is to be known as Apple Pay Later, or "Buy now, pay later."

It appears that this new way of walking out the door with Apple merchandise without having to pay in full is about to begin. This will allow you to buy Apple products in installments simply by choosing an option that will be available in the Wallet app when making a payment.

The service will allow you to pay in four equal installments and get up to six weeks interest-free. This is similar to services provided by other companies like PayPal, Affirm and Klarna. The official launch was supposed to happen last year; however, it has been delayed until this year and is expected to launch sometime in March or April.

One of the important factors determining your buying power in the new Apple Pay Later program will be tied to your purchase history. If you shopped a lot for Apple products at Apple.com or in Apple retail stores, then you could be given a higher buying worthiness score.

Aside from Apple Pay Later, Apple is also working on three other new service options.

One of the services is called Apple Card Savings Account, which is a new savings account that Apple users with an Apple Card can choose to open.

HOW TO SCHEDULE A FREE PERSONAL SESSION WITH APPLE SUPPORT

People will be able to deposit their Daily Cash to get more out of the rewards they earn with their Apple credit card. They will also be able to deposit additional funds into the account directly from a linked bank account. There is no official word yet on when this service will be released.

The other two services that Apple is reportedly working on yet have not officially been announced are an Apple Pay Monthly service and an iPhone hardware subscription program.

The best and worst places to put home security cameras

You put a lot of trust in your home security cameras. Sadly, that can come back to bite you.

Security researchers found flaws with a major brand. Namely, they weren’t encrypting private footage. Yikes.

Beyond brands, there’s placement to consider. I compiled a list to ensure the essential spots are covered and you’re not making big mistakes.

Get my free 5-minute newsletter keeping 400,000+ people tech safe and aware.

Most burglars want the most straightforward route into your home. Set up cameras inside and outside your ground-level doors. Don’t forget any side and back doors, either.

In the event of a break-in, you’ll capture a clear image of their face as they walk up to your door and see everything they do once inside.

TEXAS FAMILY'S RING DOORBELL CAMERA CAPTURES BOBCAT PERCHED ON THEIR BACKYARD FENCE: ‘I WAS TERRIFIED’

Don’t: Put cameras in the bedrooms

Most of us don't want to deal with switching our cameras on and off. Sure, some come equipped with automatic home and away modes, but the idea of a camera catching personal moments makes me uncomfortable.

Here’s a scary thought: Someone hacked into your security system. Check these signs if you suspect it happened to you.

Placement makes a world of difference. The worst place you can put a camera is on the ground. You might step on it, your dog might shower it (if you know what I mean), and it doesn’t record usable footage.

The higher, the better. This placement means your camera will be able to get the whole picture. Having cameras eight to 10 feet off the ground means you’re more likely to see an intruder’s entire body, which can help police narrow down the list of suspects if it comes to that.

Not only will you make guests uncomfortable, but you may also violate the law. It’s illegal to record people without their consent in places with an expectation of privacy.

I get it. You have medication or something else you want to keep an eye on. A contractor once stole my mom's pain pills from her medicine cabinet. Instead of putting up a camera, I put a motion sensor on the medicine cabinet door.

Sensors are an excellent way to stay safe without a digital eye always watching. Here are more smart places to stick one.

The goal of a security camera is to capture as much quality footage as possible. Placing a camera in the corner will give you a complete picture.

Just about anything can be a hidden camera, no joke. Here’s how to spot them in an Airbnb, VRBO or another rental.

Most burglars break in through obvious spots like windows or doors. Keep it simple and point the lens towards places with much traffic.

Avoid obstructions like plants, tree branches or backyard jungle gyms. Put your camera up high, so running pets or rowdy kids don't throw them off.

Do: Put up signs

Crypto-mining malware attacking Apple Mac with pirated software

A threat alert for some Apple Mac and MacBook computers running certain altered versions of Final Cut Pro editing software can hijack infected devices.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

Pirated copies of the popular video editing software have been altered to contain a malicious instruction that takes over an infected Mac or MacBook forcing it to act as a cryptocurrency mining machine for a hacker.

Worse, this latest malware disguised as legit Final Cut Pro can bypass and shut down some of the security processes running on an infected device.

FIVE DISTURBING EXAMPLES OF WHY AI IS NOT QUITE THERE

Cryptojacking - or a crypto-mining malware attack - is when a hacker successfully goes undetected placing malware on a target computer in order to use its resources to manipulate cryptocurrency like Bitcoin.

Crypto-mining malware is generally difficult to root out and can compromise computers, laptops, smartphones, tablets, and connected devices. Strong antivirus protection can often eventually detect these hidden cryptojacking attacks when it notices unusual network traffic and processes running.

Once infected, a victim’s device can often exhibit very slow speeds when it has been actively cryptojacked.

SHOULD A FOURTH LIGHT BE ADDED TO TRAFFIC SIGNALS FOR AUTONOMOUS CARS?

Investigative sleuthing by security professionals at Jamf Threat Labs led to tracing the malicious Final Cut Pro copies back to a known bad actor with a history of uploading and spreading viruses.

Since 2019, this same hacker is responsible for seeding multiple dangerous malware attacks hidden inside pirated copies of both Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro X.

IS YOUR APPLE AIRTAG ABOUT TO DIE?

Download only legit software. The safest place to download software is from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Downloading software from other sources online comes at a much higher risk of inviting malware into your world.

Update operating software. Make sure you are always running the latest version of operating software for your computer, smartphone, and tablet.

Use strong antivirus protection. It has never been more important to make sure you have good antivirus protection on all your devices.

I’ve broken down the top antivirus protection for Mac, PC, iOS and Android devices. My top pick is TotalAV and includes real-time anti-malware protection which keeps your computers protected against the very latest threats.

Five disturbing examples of why AI is not quite there

The use of artificial intelligence is growing at a tremendous rate, especially with the recent release of OpenAI's chatbot ChatGPT.

Although AI comes with its perks, it also comes with its mishaps. That has especially been proven true with OpenAI's other artificial intelligence invention known as DALL-E.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

No, DALL-E is not the cousin of the beloved PIXAR robot WALL-E. DALL-E is a digital imaging learning model that was released back in 2021. It can create digital images from natural language descriptions and prompts.

OpenAI has since released another version of DALL-E that is known as DALL-E 2, and the images it can create are truly amazing...sometimes.

I INTERVIEWED CHATGPT AS IF IT WAS A HUMAN; HERE'S WHAT IT HAD TO SAY THAT GAVE ME CHILLS

However, people have also used DALL-E and DALL-E 2 to create some silly and hilarious images, and we have 5 of the best ones to make you laugh or at least scratch your head.

One person asked DALL-E to create the world's most expensive burger, and this is what it came up with. It's a pretty cool concept to have a burger made out of green emeralds. However, it doesn't look very appetizing, does it?

If you're freaked out by clowns, you should probably look away. Another person asked DALL-E to create an image replicating what it would look like if we lived in a clown world. DALL-E took the person literally, making a giant clown stand on top of the world. That is one powerful-looking clown.

Rubik's cubes are a great way to challenge your mind, although I've never seen one that looked good enough to eat. Data scientist Max Woolf came up with the idea to ask DALL-E to create a Rubik's cube made out of peanut butter and jelly, and this was the result. This might be my favorite one solely because it looks delicious.

A friend of mine created this one. This was the prompt he gave to DALL-E: "A Vizsla and a Scottish terrier meet on a sunny afternoon in a dog park in Los Angeles. One day, they came across a little girl crying in the park. Her ice cream had fallen on the ground and was ruined." I'm not sure what breed of dog this is (it’s not a Vizsla!), and where the little girl is, although DALL-E tried its best.

I had to end with this one because it's just too funny. I asked DALL-E to create "Kurt Knutsson" holding unwrapped gifts of a laptop, iPhone, or tablet," and this is what it gave me. It didn't quite get the face right, and there are still gifts wrapped, but the electronics look believable enough.

Mexican States in Hot Competition Over Possible Tesla Plant

Mexico is undergoing a fevered competition among states to win a potential Tesla facility in jostling reminiscent of what happens among U.S. cities and states vying to win investments from tech companies. Mexican governors have gone to loopy extremes, like putting up billboards, creating special car lanes or creating mock-ups of Tesla ads for their states. And there’s no guarantee Tesla will build a full-fledged factory. Nothing is announced. And the frenzy is based mainly on Mexican officials saying Tesla boss Elon Musk will have an upcoming phone call with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Should a fourth light be added to traffic signals for autonomous cars?

What do you think of a fourth traffic light color being added to traffic signals for self-driving vehicles to help control traffic flow?

I get that one day a bunch of connected autonomous cars may outnumber human beings behind the wheel. The thing is, it would tick me off to no end if somehow traffic lights allowed driverless cars an advantage over those driven by you and me.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

A recent study was published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, arguing for exactly that.

Simulations are being conducted, and researchers are quickly realizing that a fourth traffic light could improve travel time through intersections and reduce fuel consumption.

THE 5 BEST RADAR DETECTORS AND APPS

The concept is known as the 'white phase' and would essentially introduce a new traffic signal so that drivers on the road would know what to do around autonomous vehicles or AVs

The red, yellow, and green traffic lights would all remain the same and have the same meanings of stop, caution, and yield, and it's safe to proceed.

With the extra white light added, human drivers will be signaled to simply follow the car in front of them.

CAVs, aka connected autonomous vehicles, can communicate wirelessly with each other and with the computer controlling the traffic signal.

So, when there are a lot of driverless cars at an intersection at one time, they will be able to activate the white light. That would force the human drivers behind driverless cars. You would just have to follow whatever driverless car is in front of you (if they stop, you stop. If they go, you go). This would help driverless cars to coordinate traffic through the intersection more efficiently.

In one part of the study, if there are more human drivers on the road than there are AVs, then the traffic light can go back to its regular 3-light style. Gee, thanks.

10 WAYS TO TRAVEL LIKE A PRO FOR A WORRY-FREE TRIP

The concept has been significantly improved upon since it was first introduced back in 2020. Ali Hajbabaie, an associate professor of civil, construction, and environmental engineering at North Carolina State University and corresponding author of the IEEE study, says, "This is both more efficient and less likely to fall prey to communication failures.

For example, if there’s an interruption or time lag in communication with the traffic light, the distributed computing approach would still be able to handle traffic flow smoothly."

Researchers are continuing to test this concept with the help of microscopic traffic simulators, which are simulators that can replicate real-world traffic.

These simulators are showing researchers that traffic improves with the presence of AVs and a fourth traffic light and that fuel consumption is much lower as there is much less stop-and-go movement. And with Amazon’s self-driving car recently making its first successful trip on public roads, we can likely expect more driverless cars on the road in the near future.

HEARD OF A TINY HOUSE? MEET THE MICRO RV

The concept is nowhere near ready to be adopted and put into motion yet. However, researchers like Hajbabaie are certainly very hopeful that this will become part of our norm in the future.

Is your Apple AirTag about to die?

AirTags are a great device to own, especially when it comes to keeping track of your luggage, your keys, your pet, whatever it may be.

The revolutionary trackers from Apple don't last powered forever. There does come a time, usually a little under a year, when an AirTag's battery needs to be replaced.

Do you know how to check if your Apple AirTag is about to die? And do you know how to change the battery? If you answered no to both of these questions, we have you covered.

How to check the battery level on your Apple AirTag

Usually, you’ll receive a notification on your iPhone that your AirTag battery needs to be replaced soon. Yet we all miss notifications sometimes, and you want to be sure to know how to do this when the time comes so you can continue keeping track of everything.

My pro tip: Some batteries like Duracell are sold with a bitter coating to keep kids from swallowing them. Remove that bitter coating with an alcohol wipe before placing it in the AirTag. Otherwise, the battery will have trouble making contact with an AirTag.

What kind of batteries should I use for my AirTag?

AirTag uses a coin battery called CR 2032 Lithium 3V. You can buy these at almost any electronic, hardware, or regular drug store where you would buy batteries.

I personally order mine from Amazon, as it sells a 4 Pack CR2032 3 Volt Lithium Coin Cell Battery for under $8 at the time of publishing. Also, at the time of publishing, this product had over 234,000 global ratings with 81% giving the product 5 stars.

How to extend the life of your AirTag battery

Enable lost mode only when necessary: lost mode uses more battery power because it increases the frequency at which the AirTag communicates with nearby devices. Only enable lost mode when you need to locate a lost item.

Reduce the number of notifications: you can customize the number of notifications you receive from your AirTag in the Find My app. Reducing the number of notifications can help save battery life.

HERE'S PROOF SOME AIRLINES ARE NOT FANS OF AIRTAG TRACKERS

Turn off AirTag when not in use: If you're not using the AirTag for an extended period, turn it off to conserve battery life. You can do this by removing the battery or using the Find My app to put it in lost mode, which will disable the AirTag until you reactivate it.

Avoid extreme temperatures: leaving your AirTag in a hot car or in freezing conditions for extended periods of time can degrade its battery more quickly.

Try not to overuse your AirTag: it is recommended not to exceed the device's intended usage limits. Specifically, the AirTag is designed to operate for up to 1 year, assuming no more than 4 play sound events and 1 precision finding event per day. Overusing these functions may lead to a faster depletion of the AirTag's battery.

At the time of publishing, the Apple AirTag has over 99,700+ global ratings with 84% giving the product 5 stars on Amazon.

Rental scams: How to recognize and avoid being a victim

Finding a long-term rental in an inflationary market is really a challenge, and scammers know that and are taking advantage of this vulnerability.

Whether you are looking for an apartment or a house, scammers are trying to fool you in a bunch of deceptive ways. The good news is that these are the best ways to identify and fend off these criminal swindlers.

Follow this list to make sure a prospective rental property is legit.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

If you're looking in a specific area for a place to rent, and you notice that there is one listing that is significantly lower than the other listings in that area, it could be a scam. The scammer might advertise that they are giving potential renters a rare opportunity that is going to disappear fast, hoping to draw in first-time renters, out-of-state renters or renters who are in a rush to find a place.

DESPERATELY NEED FACEBOOK HELP? DON'T FALL FOR THIS SCAM

To make sure that it is not a scam, double-check other rentals in the area you're looking at with similar amenities. You can also use a rental calculator like Rent Zestimate to see what the price of a certain rental is expected to be, based on what it is offering.

Before committing to anything, ask the property manager or landlord why the price is so low, and make sure you keep a copy of all your communication with them. You can also use review websites like Yelp or Google Reviews to check the landlord's reputation.

One big clue to a rental listing being a scam is if you come across the same listing on a different rental site, and the name of the person who listed it is different from what you originally saw. A scammer can easily get the information for a legitimate listing and change the contact information to make it look like they listed it themselves.

Always check to see if a rental you are interested in appears on various sites online, and if the contact information is different for each one, then it's probably a scam. Also, be sure to use reputable rental listing websites like Zillow, Trulia or Apartments.com. These websites usually have a verification process to ensure that the property and landlord are legitimate.

3 BIG MISTAKES THAT CAN GIVE SCAMMERS ACCESS TO YOUR BANK ACCOUNTS

If a landlord or property manager requests that you pay for the rental in cash, wire transfer or money order, that is a big scamming red flag. Once you send money in those ways, you’ll have difficulty tracing any payment if the property turns out to be a scam.

Many legit rental listings will ask you to make a payment via electronic deposit from your bank account or with a credit card or check. Some other larger properties may even have a website with a portal where you can pay online. These are all traceable options where there is little to no room for you to be scammed.

You should never give away your personal information before viewing a property. It is commonplace for potential renters to be allowed to view a property without providing any personal information like a social security number, date of birth or credit card number, and you should not be asked to make any type of payment before viewing the rental either.

If you are not able to see the property in person, request an online tour, or send an agent or a friend on your behalf.

Some scammers will go as far as giving virtual tours to potential renters in places where properties are not up for rent at all. This is so that the potential renter believes that the property is real and then becomes willing to hand over a security deposit.

CYBERCRIME: CONSTITUTES 20% OF SPAIN'S REGISTERED OFFENSES

Always schedule either an in-person or virtual meeting with the landlord or property manager early on in the process. You can also always ask someone you trust to go view the rental property for you to make sure it is legit. You can also use online tools like Google Street View, Zillow or Trulia to verify that the property is real and matches the photos and descriptions provided.

And if you're still unsure, you can contact the local assessor’s office or the county clerk, and they will provide property records on the place. Be sure to verify all names, websites and phone numbers in the listing, and read all reviews on the property manager or landlord if they have a website or any social media.

Most of all, trust your instincts. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Go with your gut, and avoid properties that seem suspicious, or landlords who seem overly pushy.

What's really killing your laptop battery?

Our laptops are super-expensive, so we want to ensure that we get as much use out of them as possible.

There is a common misconception out there about how to correctly charge your laptop to make the battery life last longer.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

I’m here to tell you the truth about how to charge your laptop properly

One of the most common misconceptions about charging laptops properly is that leaving the charger plugged into your device all the time will do more damage.

DO'S AND DON'TS OF CHARGING YOUR PHONE THE RIGHT WAY

This is only partially true. It is perfectly fine to leave your laptop plugged in most of the time and have it charge up to 100%. Most laptops contain either lithium-ion or lithium polymer batteries, and lithium-ion batteries do not have a "memory effect." Therefore, they do not require periodic discharge cycles.

However, keeping your laptop battery at 100% at all times can ultimately reduce its overall lifespan, as the battery may degrade faster when exposed to high voltage for extended periods.

To maximize battery life, it's recommended to keep the battery level between 20% and 80% and store the battery at a cool temperature when not in use. Leaving it on the charger sometimes will not kill the battery right away, however, you should just be aware of how long you're leaving it plugged in, and give it a rest now and then.

Related: Best expert-reviewed laptops for 2023

Absolutely. Buying cheap batteries and power chargers for your laptop will only damage it more quickly. Although it is always nice to save money, think about how much more money you will save in the long run if you spend a little extra on quality batteries and power chargers that won't drain the life of your laptop and force you to buy a new one.

MICROSOFT IMPOSES LIMITS ON BING CHATBOT AFTER MULTIPLE INCIDENTS OF INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR

Typically, when you buy a laptop, it will come with a charger that works best with that laptop model. If for some reason, that laptop battery fails or malfunctions, or you lose it, it is best for you to go back to the retailer you bought your laptop from (such as Apple, Best Buy) and see if you can get a replacement.

If you are traveling and cannot find a safe outlet to plug your device into, you can also purchase a quality portable charger with USB ports so that you can plug in your charger wherever you are. Here are a few options we've picked for you:

You can purchase an optional solar panel separately, which can charge your power station using the sun, so you can keep power going through an outdoor trip without ever having to find a wall outlet. At the time of publishing, this product had over 17,000 global ratings, with 84% giving it 5 stars.

Protect your phone: Steps to take if your device is lost, stolen, or broken

Simple changes go a long way to boost your smartphone’s security. Leave Bluetooth on 24/7? You should change that.

While taking a closer look at your phone, delete these apps to keep it running smoothly and safely.

Losing a phone is a nightmare. Are text messages the only thing you have left to remember someone by? Do you know your family and friends' numbers by heart? How many magical moments have you captured with your phone's camera?

It gets worse. Consider all the apps on your phone from your social media, banking, rideshare, streaming, networking, security, health, travel, delivery, and the list goes on. Your phone is a huge liability for your safety and security in the wrong hands. That's why you must take steps now should your phone go missing, stolen, or broken beyond repair.

Get my free 5-minute newsletter keeping 400,000+ people tech safe and aware.

This first section is about being prepared. Here's how to set up your phone, so you don't get nervous whenever it's out of sight. In the worst-case scenario that a criminally-minded stranger gets ahold of your phone, you will be glad you took these steps beforehand.

FIRST-GENERATION IPHONE SELLS FOR MORE THAN $63K AT AUCTION

Your old phone may lack critical security features, but you don’t have to spend a fortune on an upgrade. Here are the best used phones for $500 and under.

It’s simple: When your phone goes missing, no one should be able to unlock it. Let’s start by making sure this happens automatically. There are preset time options to choose from. The shorter the time, the better off you are.

Note: Exact steps may vary depending on your Android phone.

Your phone has built-in tools to help you locate it using another phone or computer. Here’s the caveat: You have to make sure the feature is turned on ahead of time for it to work.

Like any product, your phone has a serial number to identify it. It also has an IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). While the serial number comes from the manufacturer, IMEI numbers are standard across the industry.

Keep a record of these numbers in case you have to report your phone is stolen or missing. When you find your phone's IMEI number, take a screenshot of it. Then, save that screenshot someplace you can access it when needed. I keep mine in my photo cloud storage account. You can also print and store it in the phone's original box or another handy offline place.

Your phone is replaceable — much of what it contains isn't. Set your phone to back up automatically, so you don't have to worry about losing anything.

This crucial step is vital even if you don’t lose your phone. You’ll be happy you backed it up if it ever gets damaged to the point where you can’t turn it on or recover anything from it.

I recommend using the built-in storage that works with your phone: iCloud for iPhones and Google storage for Androids. They're both affordable and straightforward to set up and use.

DON'T BE A VICTIM: LEAVING YOUR PHONE'S BLUETOOTH ON IS A MAJOR SECURITY RISK

You get 5GB of free storage with iCloud. Need more space? You’ll have to pay 99 cents for 50GB, $2.99 for 200GB, and $9.99 for 2TB.

Money tip: My family and I share a plan that cuts the cost.

You get 15GB of free cloud storage with your Google account. A Basic Google One plan costs $1.99 monthly and has 100GB of storage. A Standard plan costs $2.99 monthly for 200GB, and a Premium plan costs $9.99 and comes with 2TB of storage.

RELATED: 4 data backup mistakes that could cost you your photos, videos and other files

You've searched every couch cushion, and your phone is nowhere to be found. Or maybe you left it at a restaurant. The process is the same. Start by trying to locate it before assuming the worst.

Did you know that Find My works even when your phone is off or the battery is dead? It’s one of three things your iPhone does after it shuts down.

Found it? Congratulations! If not, read on.

This step is essential when you don't know where your phone is located— or if you've spotted it but don't have it. The good news is it's simple to do remotely from another device.

You tried everything, and your smartphone is well and truly lost. You should remotely wipe the data stored on it to make sure no one else has access to it.

This step is a last resort, but if you back up your phone, as I showed you earlier, you won't have to worry about losing anything.

Remember when I told you to record your serial and IMEI numbers? Here’s why that’s so important when reporting your phone as stolen.

The police can use these numbers to identify your phone if they find it, and your carrier may block the IMEI code to lock your phone out of the network. The last thing you need is someone taking over your number.

By the way, before buying a used phone, be sure it's not stolen goods. You can search a database of stolen phones to check.

Navy pilot made crucial error before crashing F-35C into USS Carl Vinson in South China Sea

A U.S. Navy investigation is reportedly placing blame on a mistake by a pilot for the crash of an F-35C Lightning II jet into the deck of a U.S. aircraft carrier in the South China Sea last year.

A report shared with Military.com showed investigators concluded that the Jan. 24 crash – which involved the USS Carl Vinson – was the result of the pilot choosing to perform a specialized landing but failing to switch on electronic aides in the plane.

Video of the incident circulated on social media, and several sailors were injured. The pilot managed to eject safely.

The report said the crash caused millions of dollars in damage to another plane and hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to the deck of the carrier.

NAVY SEAL KILLED IN FREE-FALL PARACHUTE ACCIDENT IN ARIZONA

It identified the pilot only by his rank of lieutenant and said he had wanted to try an "expedited recovery maneuver" known as the "Sierra Hotel Break" or SHB.

The outlet said the SHB was described by the Navy as "when an aircraft initiates a turn to downwind from either behind the ship or over the top of the ship … [using] G-forces to decelerate over the course of a 360-degree turn, dropping the landing gear when the aircraft is below landing gear transition speed." It says a pilot has a "reduced amount of time to configure the aircraft and conduct landing checks."

The lieutenant reportedly didn't turn on the Approach Power Compensation Mode (APC) or the Delta Flight Path (DFP). The APC maintains the jet at the right angle and the DFP automatically adjusts the throttle.

AVIATION MILESTONE: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FLEW A MODIFIED F-16 FIGHTER JET FOR OVER 17 HOURS

The landing signals officer told the pilot to hit the afterburners in the moment caught on video, with entire incident lasting four around five minutes.

The plane sank into the ocean and was salvaged by the Navy in March of last year.

The Navy did not immediately respond to multiple requests for comment from Fox News Digital, but Navy spokesman Cmdr. Zach Harrell told Military.com that the pilot "is no longer in a flying status in the U.S. Navy, but will continue to serve as a Naval officer."

Investigators issued a series of recommendations to prevent further incidents and said the Navy is not recommending an end to expedited recovery maneuvers, or SHBs.

Desperately need Facebook help? Don’t fall for this scam.

We recently received this email from Sue M. about a scam she nearly fell for when she tried changing her Facebook account password.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

Here's what she has to say:

"It all started when my Facebook was hacked. I couldn't get in to change my password, so I googled Facebook customer service. A number came up, which I foolishly called.

I was told to download the Anydesk app. He asked to type in my address, but the screen never came up. I started feeling uncomfortable, so I hung up and uninstalled the app. My question is, has my Samsung android phone been invaded?

I got a new credit card number, but I am afraid to use it on my phone. Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for your time!!!" - Sue M.

Sue was right to uninstall the Anydesk app, as this scam has been used before by other Facebook scammers.

PEDOPHILES ARE USING THE METAVERSE TO LURE UNSUSPECTING CHILDREN, ACCORDING TO POLICE DATA

It has been reported before that scammers will call innocent victims and tell them to install the Anydesk app, just like this one did with Sue.

Anydesk is a secure app that allows IT experts to work on your computer remotely with whatever tech issues you're having, which would make sense considering Sue was intending to call Facebook for IT help.

However, scammers will ask you to download this app so that they can access your computer or mobile phone to get personal and bank details. Once they have this information from you, there's no telling how much damage they can do.

How hackers are using ChatGPT to create malware to target you

The research firm Checkpoint has confirmed that ChatGPT, the new AI chatbot created by OpenAI, is running into problems yet again. This time it has to do with malware.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

Cybercriminals have now figured out a way to hack into the chatbot and overwhelm it with malware commands.

The research from Checkpoint said that these cybercriminals have created their very own bots that can infiltrate OpenAI’s GPT-3 API and alter its code.

Once the code is altered, the malware bot can generate malicious content, such as text that can be used for phishing emails and malware scripts. The bots have been working via the messaging app Telegram, where they can set up a restriction-free, dark version of ChatGPT.

CHATGPT'S ANTI-CHEATING TECHNOLOGY COULD STILL LET MANY STUDENTS FOOL THEIR TEACHERS

ChatGPT normally has settings that allow it to refuse to give responses to things like malicious codes or phishing emails. However, once this malware overrides ChatGPT's regular coding, hackers can then pretend to be another person or even a business and generate phishing emails.

Hackers only have to pay costs of $6 for every 100 queries, and they will then have access to all kinds of tips and examples of bad content that they can generate on ChatGPT.

It's hard to say how much this will change ChatGPT as it is still a relatively new product. This is not the first time that the chatbot has been attacked by scammers.

AIRTAG TRACKER DETECTOR WARNS OF STALKERS IN SECONDS

Thousands of people were tricked into paying for an iOS and Android app replicating ChatGPT back in January. ChatGPT is completely free to use as of now, aside from having to pay the initial ChatGPT Plus subscription fee, which costs $20 per month.

The best way to protect yourself from any kind of malware is to have antivirus software installed on your device.

Democrats finally get their own donkey emoji

Apple has announced that it will release a new group of 31 different emojis with its iOS 16.4 update expected to come out sometime in the spring.

As Republicans have been able to use the elephant emoji to honor their party on social media and texts since 2015, Democrats have waited eight years to finally get to do the same since one of the newly released emojis will be a donkey.

MICROSOFT IMPOSES LIMITS ON BING CHATBOT AFTER MULTIPLE INCIDENTS OF INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR

If you're wondering why it took all these years for the donkey emoji to become a thing, the decision is made by the information technology standard known as Unicode.

The nonprofit corporation has what is called the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee, and they have selection criteria that they must follow when choosing new emojis. Essentially, the way they choose comes down to these 3 main factors:

Over the years, the committee has also considered inclusion factors such as race, gender and sexual orientation. Way back when emojis first came out, all human emojis pretty much had one skin tone (white), all the couple emojis only showed heterosexual couples, and all the single people emojis typically had limited hairstyles.

Nowadays, you can find emojis with pretty much any skin tone, same-sex couples and long-haired, short-haired and even bald person emojis. Some Democrats have taken to social media to ask why there has never been a donkey emoji created for the Democratic Party in the past, so it looks like Unicode is finally caving in.

Here is a full list of the 31 new emojis Apple will be releasing.

Microsoft Bing is a web search engine that is owned and operated by Microsoft (pretty much their own version of Google). It works just like any other search engine, where you can type in questions and get answers, including articles, images, videos, shopping, maps and more.

Now, Microsoft has introduced a new Chat option where you can ask Bing a question, and it will give a more exact, typed-out answer rather than feeding you multiple articles for you to read on the topic.

For example, if you're looking to make a three-course meal with no nuts or seafood, you can simply type, "I need to throw a dinner party for six people who don't eat nuts or seafood. Can you suggest a three-course menu?" and the search engine will give you a list of options you can make with suggestions for appetizers, main courses, and dessert.

Anyone can use Microsoft Bing if they join what Microsoft calls "the new Bing." You can request access by going to Bing.com and selecting "Join the waitlist."

When you have cleared the waitlist, you will receive an email letting you know that you can now access the new Bing at Bing.com. Once you have access, you can start typing in your usual search box, and Bing will give you detailed answers.

CONGRESS BLOCKS FUNDING REQUEST FOR MICROSOFT HEADSETS AFTER TESTING CONCERNS: REPORT

It has been reported that the new Bing has been having some malfunctions since its initial release. Many new users got excited and wanted to see how long they could converse back and forth with the search engine, and these longer conversations began to overwhelm it.

Some people posted screenshots of their conversations to social media, showing how the new Bing was convinced that the year was 2022 and not 2023 and would gaslight users by saying things like "Please don't doubt me" and "I'm Bing, I know the date."

Other people have found the chatbot's answers amusing. However, since Microsoft is investing around $10 billion in this new way of communication, the company is now setting limits to make sure that it actually works as it is supposed to.

WINDOWS GOTCHAS: HOW TO AVOID THE TOP 5 MOST COMMON MISTAKES

Microsoft noticed that the new Bing would only act inappropriately when the conversations with its users were carried on for too long. Because of this, the tech company is implementing limits on how many questions you can ask.

The new Bing can now answer five questions per session and 50 questions in a day. This means that you can ask it 5 questions on the same topic before you have to switch topics.

The company says that the chatbot is still very much a work in progress and that current users are helping them to improve the technology so that it can be more reliable in the future.
