China launches third and final space module to complete space station

China launched its third and final module Monday in its effort to complete its permanent space station as competition with the United States continues to intensify.

Mengtian was launched into space from Wenchang Satellite Launch Center in Hainan. It is the second laboratory module for the station, along with Wentian.

Onlookers donned Chinese flags as well as T-shirts with the characters for China, while photographers also crowded in to document the event. 

Mengtian was launched aboard a Long March-5B Y4 carrier rocket and was expected to spend 13 hours in flight before reaching the station, known as Tiangong, or "Celestial Palace." Crew members will be able to conduct experiments in a zero-gravity atmosphere on Mengtian while also having access to an airlock and a small robotic arm to aid in extravehicular payloads.

Tiangong is currently housing three crew members — two male and one female astronauts — according to the China Manned Space Agency. The crew members arrived at the station in June for a six-month-long venture in which they will complete the station's assembly, engage in spacewalks and conduct other experiments. 

Following Mengtian's arrival, an uncrewed Tianzhou cargo craft is expected to dock with the station next month, with a crewed mission scheduled shortly after in December. Crews may overlap as a result of the scheduled launches. 

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION MOVES TO AVOID ORBITAL DEBRIS

Mengtian and Wentian collectively make up Tiangong. They are both connected to the Tianhe core module where the crew currently lives and works. 

Wentian is the heaviest single-module spacecraft currently in space, weighing in at 23 tons. China plans to launch the Xuntian space telescope next year, which will orbit in sequence with Tiangong and dock occasionally for maintenance. 

China's increasing space capabilities have become a hot-button topic as competition with the U.S. continues to gain momentum.

China’s crewed space program is officially three decades old this year. But it truly got underway in 2003, when China became only the third country after the U.S. and Russia to put a human into space using its own resources.

5 iPhone security settings you need to change now

Your phone doesn't come with a user manual. Sure, you can find online guides from Apple or Android, but don't bet on Big Tech telling you the secrets to best protect yourself.

Default settings are often much better for the companies behind them than for you. Tap or click for 10 default iPhone settings that need your attention. 

Some features get more attention than others, like the new way to take back a text. Tap or click to see what really happens when you unsend a text. Spoiler: It’s not quite as sneaky as you think.

Now, grab your iPhone and I’ll show you a few changes to make to keep yourself safe.

1. Clear out the junk texts

Spam calls are blocked relatively effectively at the carrier level, but texts are different. If your phone is inundated with fake shipping notifications and other junk, take a few steps to stop them.

The most basic and straightforward method to stop spam texts is to block the number. Here’s how to block a number in Messages:

You can also go a step further by filtering messages from unknown senders. Texts from anyone not in your contact list will be sent to the Unknown Senders tab in the Messages list. Here's how to do it:

Bonus tip: If you get a message from an unknown number identified as spam or junk, you can report it to Apple. In the message, tap Report Junk, then Delete and Report Junk.

What if you get a verification code you didn’t request? It might be nothing, but it could be a scam. Tap or click here for hints you need to take action.

2. Stop all the tracking

When you go from one website to another, you’re often followed by trackers that collect data on where you’ve been and what you’ve been doing. 

Data on your browsing habits, likes, shares, ads you click, and shopping cart is all up for grabs. This info can be sold to third parties or used for targeted advertising.

Safari limits third-party cookies and data. The good news is this is on by default, but it’s a good idea to ensure you have this option turned on. Here’s how:

3. Block the creep who won’t leave you alone

4. Browse privately

Apple iPhone updates: Which one is best?

More than a month after the release of iOS 16, Apple has made iOS 16.1 and iOS 15.7.1 to its iPhone users. 

Both of the updates address the same security issues and include a number of new changes. 

Apple's support page said it is aware of a report that the vulnerability fixed in the updates may have been exploited in attacks.

According to Forbes, iOS 16.1 will offer more robust security protection than iOS 15.7.1.

APPLE CONFIRMS IPHONE WILL GET USB-C CHARGING AFTER EU MANDATE

iOs 16.1 also touts bug fixes in addition to other features.

Some of those bug fixes include for deleted conversations that may appear in the conversations list in Message, for Dynamic Island content that is not available when using Reachability and when Carplay may fail to connect when using a VPN app.

Reader controls are automatically hidden in Books and the update allows for Clean Energy Charging. 

Apple says Clean Energy Charging can try to reduce a user's carbon footprint by "selectively charging when lower carbon emission electricity is available."

It also touts the ability to securely share car, hotel room and other keys in Wallet using messaging apps like Messages and WhatsApp.

This release also adds support for third party apps in Live Activities, support for Apple Fitness+ on iPhone ven if you don't have an Apple Watch, and includes other features and bug fixes for your iPhone," Apple says,. 

For more cautious iPhone updaters, the choice to stay on iOS 15.7.1 is there. 

People on iOS 15 – or those with older devices – should feel free to update to iOS 15.7.1.

According to 9to5Mac, the official release notes for the update don't mention any new features beyond security enhancements.

The holidays will be here before you know it, and — like it or not — Amazon is an easy way to get something everyone will love.

Once you decide on the perfect gifts, take a few steps to ensure you don't spoil the surprise. 

Stop Alexa from spilling the beans 

If you have an Echo device, Alexa can automatically tell you delivery updates for items you order. Cool, except when Alexa loudly announces the delivery, ruining a surprise. Now, your gift recipient will know just what to expect. 

To keep the element of surprise for your gift orders, follow these steps to disable the feature in the Alexa app: 

Open the Alexa app on your phone. 

Tap More > Settings. 

Choose Notifications. 

Select Amazon Shopping. 

Uncheck the box labeled For items in delivery updates under the section Let Alexa say or show titles for items you’ve ordered.

Clever ways to hide purchases 

If you’re sharing the same Amazon account with another family member, there are ways to hide purchases and searches to avoid spoilers. Here are a few options. 

Archive an order 

When you archive orders, this action hides gift purchases from your order history and can also hide items you no longer want to reference or are simply too embarrassed to reveal. 

To archive an order, hover your cursor over Account & Lists > Your Account and click on Your Orders. Find the order you want to hide and click Archive Order. This will remove the item from immediate viewing within your order history. 

Note: Archived orders can still be viewed by going to the Your Account page and selecting Archived orders. These items can also be restored by selecting Unarchive Order. 

Remove items from your browsing history 

To avoid revealing your gift ideas to the entire household, you can remove items from your browsing history. Hover your cursor over Account & Lists > Your Account and click on Browsing History. A list of things you’ve looked at will appear. For each item that you want to hide, tap Remove from view. 

Note: If you want all searches hidden, turn off your account’s Browsing History entirely by selecting Manage history and toggling off Turn browsing history on/off. 

Remove items from your recommendations 

Amazon’s Recommended List is another source of potential gift spoilers. This is an automated list of items the algorithm thinks you’ll like based on prior purchases.

To exclude certain purchases from influencing your recommendations, go to Amazon’s Improve Your Recommendations section, locate the item you want to exclude, then toggle off Use this item for recommendations.

Ship to an Amazon Locker 

Deliveries can also ruin the surprise. Nothing says "something’s up" more blatantly than a big Amazon box waiting at your front door — especially when special occasions like Christmas or your anniversary are coming up. 

You can always ship to a nearby Amazon Locker. What are Amazon Lockers? Delivery sites are located in more than 900 U.S. cities. You can ship an item to an Amazon Locker of your choice and then pick it up at a convenient time. 

To ship to an Amazon Locker, find your closest Locker location while logged in to your Amazon account and add it to your shipping address book. When you purchase an item, you can select your Locker as the shipping address. 

Once an item has been delivered to the Locker, Amazon will email you the unique six-digit code you’ll need to retrieve it. Enter the code on the Locker’s touchscreen interface, wait for the Locker door to open, and pick up your package. 

Note: Although most items can be shipped to Amazon Lockers, size and weight restrictions still exist. You only have three calendar days to pick it up, or it will be returned to Amazon for a refund. There is no additional cost for using an Amazon Locker, but standard shipping rates (including free Prime shipping) still apply. 
 

Keep your Amazon account secure. One smart step is to remove your Amazon public profile. Tap or click for five security steps every Amazon shopper should take. 

Ship to a different address 

You can also ship to a different address by hovering your cursor over Account & Lists > Your Account and clicking on Your addresses.

Just click Add Address and put in the details. For security reasons, you’ll be asked to confirm your credit card each time you place an order using a new or edited address. 

You can also delete or edit any saved address in this section. 

Amazon Key 

Amazon Key is an easy way to have Amazon packages delivered inside your garage. It's free for Prime members and works with Amazon, Amazon Fresh, and Whole Foods Market deliveries.

Apple confirms iPhone will get USB-C charging after EU mandate

Apple has confirmed that the iPhone will support USB-C charging following a European Union mandate.

In a Tuesday interview at The Wall Street Journal's annual Tech Live conference, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior VP of worldwide marketing, said the tech giant had been in a "little bit of a disagreement" over the issue. 

"Governments, you know, get to do what they're going to do. And, obviously, we'll have to comply," he said. "We have no choice – as we do around the world – to comply to local laws. But, you know, we think the approach would have been better environmentally and better for our customers to not have a government be that prescriptive." 

Joswiak did not answer whether the company would include the connector on phones outside the EU.

He noted that power adapters with detachable cables made it easy for people to use what they had already and "not have to be disrupted."

Fox News Digital's request for comment from Apple, including asking when the change would be made, was not immediately returned.

The law – which was given final approval earlier in the week – says all mobile phones, tablets, headphones, gaming consoles and cameras sold in member countries will have to be equipped with a USB-C charging port by the end of 2024.

That mandate will extend to laptops by spring 2026 and the European Parliament said the measure is part of a broader effort to reduce e-waste. 

According to the European Commission, the directive also allows consumers to choose whether to purchase a new device with or without a charger. 

Four years after the directive is enforced, the commission said it would assess whether an unbundling of sales should be mandatory.

In a release, the commission said EU consumers bought approximately 420 million electronic devices in 2020 and own three chargers, on average, to charge the devices – with 38% reporting problems charging because no compatible charger was available.

Hinge app rolling out video verification feature to confirm user authenticity

The popular dating app Hinge is rolling out "Selfie Verification" in an effort to help confirm the authenticity of its users. 

The tool uses a combination of technology and human moderators to compare profile photos with a video selfie taken in real time within the app.

After the selfie is captured, facial recognition technology compares facial geometries to photos on the user's profile, 

Facial geometry data is deleted following verification, usually within a period of 24 hours.

Once the selfie is confirmed, a "Verified" badge is added to the user's profile.

To detect fraud, machine-learning technology is in place and Hinge has trained content monitors. 

For example, there are automatic scans of profiles for red-flag language and images, device fingerprinting and photo hashtags, and manual reviews of suspicious profiles, activities and user-generated reports.

Hinge also blocks email and IP addresses as well as other identifiers associated with known bad actors. 

"At Hinge, our team utilizes a series of AI and machine learning tools that proactively remove potentially fraudulent accounts before a user ever sees them or before harm can occur. We also continuously invest in innovative technology and moderation tools to help prevent and disrupt potential harm," a Hinge spokesperson told F. "Next month, Hinge is rolling out Selfie Verification globally as an additional step to help users confirm the authenticity of profiles."

Selfie Verification will be available to all users in December.

Wired reported on an increase in fake Hinge accounts. The outlet said a Match Group spokeswoman confirmed photographic verification would be coming to Hinge, OKCupid and Match.com in the coming months.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, reports of romance scams hit a record $547 million in 2021.

Best ways to charge your phone’s battery

We spend so much money on tech that it's incredibly frustrating when our devices break. A little prevention can go a long way. Here are six checkups to give your tech now to avoid a shocking repair bill later.

Don’t rely on knock-off chargers 

High-quality chargers have circuits inside of them that switch off when there’s too much power draw. This protects your phone battery from overcharging, breaking, or overheating your phone. 

ARE YOU ‘ADDICTED’ TO YOUR SMARTPHONE?

Heat is your battery’s biggest enemy. Some cheap chargers and cables have even led to fire and injuries. Saving money is great, but don’t skimp on quality here. 

Here’s a list of safe options that will charge your phone safely. 

Be careful with power banks 

Just like with cheap chargers, cheap power banks can ruin your battery over time. Be sure any power bank you use has overcharge protection. If not, you can still use it, but keep an eye out. Once your battery is almost full, unplug it. 

It would be best if you also avoided power banks with quick charge options unless they're from a reliable brand. Here's a rule of thumb: If you've never heard of it, say no. 

Rapid charging can send too much electricity to your phone and cause battery damage. This high voltage could, at the very least, shorten your battery lifespan.

Don’t download battery-draining apps

3 common mistakes when installing security cameras

Security cameras give us peace of mind that our homes and valuables are safe when we're away. A doorbell camera can be a big deterrent for sneaky thieves. With the holidays right around the corner, tap or click here for my best advice to keep your packages safe. 

They aren't failsafe, though. Crooks can jam Wi-Fi-connected video doorbells and rob you before you realize what happened. It’s rare but possible. Tap or click for smart ways to stop them in their tracks. 

The good news is there are steps you can take to protect the devices that protect you. 

1. You cheaped out. 

We all want to save a buck, but going for the cheapest option is never smart regarding tech. I don't just mean you'll miss out on essential features, either. Cheap brands are more likely to cut corners when it comes to security, too.

Here are the features I think are important: 

Audio recording and HD video (you’ll wish you had this in case something happens and you need the footage) 

A privacy shutter that covers the lens when you don’t want the camera filming 

At least seven days of storage 

Regular security and firmware updates

Speaking of saving money, these five mistakes are like flushing cash down the toilet. 

2. You just plugged it in to get it to work. 

Repeat after me: Default passwords must be changed. This step is vital when it comes to your security system or even just a standalone camera. 

There’s no excuse for using a weak password, either. Even if you don’t pay for a password manager, the major browsers have built-in tools that generate and store unique passwords for you. 

If you use a password manager, be sure it uses 256-bit encryption and two-factor authentication, at the very least. 

Another option is to use an online password generator to create something virtually unguessable. You can note this down digitally (not on your desktop!) or even in a paper notebook. Keep this away from your computer.

3. You ignore the updates. 

You’re used to updating your smartphone and your computer. You need to do the same for the rest of your connected devices. 

Updates improve features and usability but, more importantly, often beef up a device's security. Automatic updates are usually turned on by default, but you should pop in and check now and then to ensure you're protected. 

You can check up on your software version through your device's app. For example, open the app and go to Account > Firmware Update if you have a Wyze system. Here you can make sure you have the newest software for each device. Otherwise, there's an Upgrade All option at the bottom. 

I get a lot of questions about security cams, but even more about what to do if you suspect someone is spying on your phone. Tap or click for signs a hacker can see everything you do. 

Bonus Mistake: You forgot about your router.

Your router settings affect everything connected to your Wi-Fi, including your security cameras. Make sure yours is locked down. 

Here are some helpful tips: 

Keep your router updated just as you would any device in your home. 

A good router should have strong encryption. The old standard is Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2). Newer devices use the superior WPA3. If it’s been years since you updated your route, take my quick quiz to find the right model for your home. 

A built-in firewall is standard in most routers manufactured in the last decade. You can tweak settings to customize what data goes in and out of your router, but be careful, as you can make things worse. The default setting is good enough for most situations. 

Go into your router settings and disable remote access. It’s not worth leaving it on if you need a tech to look through it. You’ll usually find this setting under Remote Administration.

Want to leave Facebook? Do this vital step first to save your photos

While you can’t completely delete yourself from the internet, you can stop people from finding out more information about you. Tap or click here to remove your information from invasive people search sites. 

The more social media accounts you have, the more data companies collect on you. There’s an easy way to clean up your old posts from Twitter, Facebook, Imgur and more. Tap or click here for a tool that can automatically remove posts from more than 20 sites and apps all in one go. 

Some of us have been on Facebook for years, meaning we have several years’ worth of photos and videos stored there. Here’s how to get all your media off of Facebook if you’re ready to pull the plug. 

Grab your stuff and go 

Facebook’s built-in downloader tool makes it easy to download your entire Facebook history, including photos and videos. You can do this via desktop or mobile. 

You will also have the option to download your messages, stories, and Reels. 

I recommend selecting the HTML download format, which will make your data easier to read in your web browser. Select the JSON format if you want to import your data to another app or service. 

Downloading your data via the Facebook mobile app 

Open the Facebook app and tap on your profile. 

Tap the gear icon to open Settings, then tap Profile settings. 

Scroll down to Your Facebook information and tap Download profile information. 

Check or uncheck the boxes for various categories. Other options include date range, download format, and media quality. 

When you’re ready, tap Create File to start the download. 

Your request will appear as Pending in the Available Copies section of the Download Your Information tool. 

You’ll get a notification when it’s ready, which could take several days. Once this happens, go to the Available Copies section of the Download Your Information tool. 

Tap Download and enter your password. 

Downloading your data via Facebook computer 

Open Facebook on your computer and click on your profile. 

Select Settings & privacy > Settings. 

Select Privacy > Your Facebook information from the left pane. 

Select Download profile information. 

Check or uncheck the boxes for various categories. Other options include date range, download format, and media quality. 

When you’re ready, click Request a download to start the download. 

Your request will appear as Pending in the Available Files section of the Download Your Information tool. 

You’ll get a notification when it’s ready, which could take several days. Once this happens, go to the Available Files section of the Download Your Information tool. 

Click Download and enter your password. 

You need a Facebook account to use Messenger, but guess what? It doesn’t have to be active. Here’s how to use Messenger without a Facebook account. 

Shutting down your account 

YOUR PRINTER NEEDS A CLEANUP - FOLLOW THIS 3 STEP CHECKLIST

Gather any contact information you need from your Facebook friends before you go. You may have no other way of contacting some of them. 

If you have a Page set up for your business or just for fun, you’ll have to turn ownership over to someone else, as this will be deleted along with your account. 

Be warned that you can’t get anything back once you delete your Facebook account. Your profile, photos, comments, posts, videos, and anything you’ve added and posted will be gone. 

Are you ready to extricate yourself from Facebook? It’s easiest to do this on a computer. Here’s how: 

Log into Facebook and click the downward-facing arrow in the top-right. 

Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings. 

Select Your Facebook Information in the left column. 

Click Deactivation and deletion. 

Select Delete account, then Continue to account deletion. 

Click Delete account and enter your password, then click Continue. 

You have 30 days to change your mind about deleting your account. After that time passes, you can’t take it back. To cancel the deletion process, log in to your Facebook account and click Cancel Deletion. 

Facebook may take 90 days from start to finish to delete everything you’ve posted. The good news is other users can’t see your profile during this time. Facebook also says it may keep your info for legal issues and terms violations, among other things.

Your printer needs a cleanup - Follow this 3 step checklist

It’s funny how long we’ll settle with outdated tech that barely does the job.

With some devices, it’s not so obvious when we need a newer model. Your home’s router, for instance, might work OK — but if it’s several years old, your network security is at risk, and it's also probably slowing down your internet speeds. Then there’s the trusty printer you bought for your home office. It's time to give it a little maintenance, so it works better and lasts longer. By the way, your printer has its own email address. Tap or click to find how you can use it to print from your phone or tablet.

Check the nozzle 

You can run a nozzle check from your computer to see if the print heads are clogged. Instructions vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Check your user manual or the manufacturer's website for specific instructions. Now, this step will use some of your valuable ink. 

Don’t have the manual anymore? This handy site holds user manuals for hundreds of thousands of products. 

Once you start the nozzle check, your printer will spit out a test page. If the test page has solid print lines, your nozzle is clean. If the print lines are broken up, your print head needs cleaning. Keep reading for the steps to take. 

Pro tip: Print a page that uses every color at least once a month to keep your printer happy.

If your nozzle check comes back poorly, it’s time to clean your print heads. Dust and ink can clog up the heads. Cleaning them will extend your printer’s life and make your prints look much nicer. 

Print heads can be part of the printer cartridge or built into the printer, depending on your model. Again, instructions vary from printer to printer, so check with your manufacturer for specific instructions.

If your printer has multiple options, start with the regular cleaning, then move up to the deep clean if necessary. 

Pro tip: Sometimes, neglected print heads need even more TLC. Your manual may instruct you to clean them physically if the automated processes can't do the job. 

MORE CLEANING KNOW-HOW: The best way to clean all the dirt and grime off your tech 

Dust all the nooks and crannies 

Raise your hand if your printer is covered in dust. OK, clean it off. 

Dusting the inside and outside of your printer will keep dust, dirt, and grime from building up.

This means it will run more smoothly — and it will last longer. You don’t want to be too rough with the interior. Use a soft, lint-free cloth. A Q-tip works well for hard-to-reach spots, but don’t stick it in any ports or you might leave behind fuzz.

Update your software and drivers 

Every device we own requires updates to keep them running smoothly and protected against security vulnerabilities. 

The same goes for your printer. Regularly check your manufacturer’s website for software updates for your printer. You won’t believe all the ways hackers find to break into our systems. Set a reminder to do this every three months.

7 things you should never throw away (or you could be in legal trouble)

By now, we all know how to separate trash from recyclables.

But what about the other things we no longer need? The answer is no if you're holding an old bottle of medication. Tap or click here to check if any of your meds have been recalled.

Motor oil, engine coolant and other vehicle chemicals must also be disposed of properly. Speaking of cars, you don't need a brand new one to get today's tech inside. Tap or click for affordable upgrades you can make to your older car.

Many everyday items have their methods of safe disposal. Note: I include general guidelines here, but you always check with your local waste authority to be safe.

1. Household batteries 

Batteries are broken down into two broad categories: Single-use and rechargeable. How you dispose of them is quite different.

To find more recycling and disposal information, go to this resource page at Earth911. Select a type of battery from the left drop-down menu and enter your ZIP code. Note that stores like Staples, Home Depot, and Best Buy have battery drop-off programs.

2. Smartphones and tablets

There’s no way to remove the battery from many smartphones or tablets. Don’t simply chuck these devices in the trash, as the batteries can cause fires.

So, what should you do with it? Try trading in the old device when purchasing a new one. Most manufacturers will recycle it for free even if you don’t get credit for it. Check out Apple’s program, for example.

The resource page at Earth911 has locations that will accept your old phone or tablet.

Before turning in or recycling your old device, it’s imperative to do a factory reset. Otherwise, you’re potentially handing over a lot of personal information. Tap or click here for instructions on wiping your phone, computer, and smart speaker before getting rid of them.

3. Televisions

Your television contains glass, lead, and other dangerous chemicals and should not end up in a landfill. And unless it’s bulk trash pickup time, don’t just put your old TV on the curb.

Try calling your local Best Buy, Walmart, and other electronics stores to see if they’ll accept old TVs for recycling. If you’re having a new one delivered and installed, they should take the old one, though there may be a fee.

If you strike out, contact your local recycling facility or sanitation department for more information. They may schedule a pickup or direct you where to go.

Consider donating the TV to a friend or thrift store. Perhaps a local retirement home or school could use it. Try posting it on a buy nothing group in your area if none of your friends and family bite.

Before getting rid of your TV, sign out of every connected service and wipe your Wi-Fi password. Yes, your TV is watching. Here’s how to stop some of the tracking.

4. Car batteries

Car batteries contain lead and acid and pose a severe environmental risk to humans and animals. That means don’t drop your old one in a dumpster.

If you replace your battery at an auto shop, they should take the old one and dispose of it for you. This is the law in some jurisdictions and applies to retailers who sell car batteries, even if they don't sell you one or install one for you.

Check with retailers such as AutoZone, Pep Boys, Advance Auto Parts, Walmart, and even local repair shops. They might take your old car battery off your hands.

5. Lighters

Just like batteries, there are disposable and reusable lighters.

You can safely throw those cheap plastic lighters you can pick up just about anywhere in the trash if they're empty, though this depends on state laws. 

Don’t pour it down the sink if there’s still lighter fluid. Go outside and activate the lighter until the fluid is used. If it gets too hot, take a break and try later. In some jurisdictions, you need to take your lighter to a household hazardous waste site.

Zippos and butane utility lighters can be used repeatedly, but when it’s time to get rid of them, be careful. Make sure they’re empty before disposing of them and if you have leftover lighter fluid or butane, take that to your nearest household hazardous waste site. Again, never pour this stuff down any drain.

I ditched lighter fluid altogether and bought a rechargeable arc lighter. When it dies, plug it in. Tap or click here for my favorites, including one under $10.

6. Thermometers

Old-school glass thermometers can contain mercury, which is highly toxic to the environment and living things. Don’t throw it in the trash, and be careful not to break it.

Some universities will take old thermometers and may even give you a newer digital model, or you can check your local HHW facility.

7. Car tires

Car tires contain steel belts that can puncture landfills and contaminate the environment. When you change your tires at a shop, they should take your old ones. There may be a small fee.

If you have old tires, most car dealerships and automotive retailers will take them for recycling, though you might have to pay for this service. You can also call your trash service to schedule a pickup.

Tech tip: What really happens when you unsend a text on your iPhone

If you have an iPhone 8 or later, you've probably already updated to iOS 16. The latest operating system has many new security features you should be using.

One of the most noteworthy features of iOS 16 is the ability to edit and unsend text messages. It’s not as clear-cut as it seems. Here’s the truth.

Reality: Your recipient gets a notification.

Yes, you can take back a message you sent, but there’s more to it. The unsend feature only works with iMessage (iPhone to iPhone), and you and the recipient must be running iOS 16.

If you unsend a message to someone running an older version of iOS, they’ll still see it, and you’ll get a notification reminding you of that.

The reality: Those deleted messages stick around for a bit.

When you delete a text thread, it’s stored in a folder on your iPhone’s recently deleted messages file for 30 days. You can recover it or delete it permanently right then and there. That also means anyone can see your deleted messages if they have your passcode.

Here's the good news: Text messages you unsend do not appear in the recently deleted messages file.
