What Android app should you delete and what does it do?

The app to delete is Todo: Day Manager, which has been flagged after installing a dangerous banking trojan malware called Xenomorph. The malware can seize your banking information and even gain access to your private SMS messages by intercepting your two-step verification codes to raid your logins.

The experts found that the malware is dropped in as a fake Google Service application from the internet hosting service GitHub as soon as Todo is installed. It sneakily starts by asking users to enable access permission. Once that permission is granted, it will add itself as a device admin and won't allow users to disable it.

HOW TO FACETIME ON ANDROID DEVICES

If you have the app installed but did not grant access permission to the malware, then you should be able to delete the app without any issues. If you did grant access, you may have to back up your files and factory-reset your phone to get rid of the app.

To back up and restore your Android, visit CyberGuy.com and search "backup and restore" by clicking the magnifying glass icon at the top of my website.

How can I protect myself against malware in the future?

You must always remain on the lookout for suspicious-looking activity appearing on your devices. You can take these extra precautionary steps to make sure that you avoid malware-stricken apps at all times.

What is the Google Home System? Ways for it to transform your life.

The Google Home system started as a simple wireless speaker that could take voice commands. However, it has become a robust system for automating your home. Controlled by the Google Home app, it allows you to ask questions, launch apps and create routines that control your home's devices. The Google Home app is available for OS and Android devices.

What do you need to get started with Google Home?

You’ll need a Google Home speaker device like this Google nest mini, a Google Home app, or a Google/Gmail account to use Google Home. The Google Home app will walk you through the setup, and you’ll be able to add other information, like your location, so you can get local weather or traffic updates. You’ll also want to connect your Google Home app with other apps like Spotify or Google Photos to increase the device’s functionality.

What kinds of things can I do with Google Home?

In short, Google Home is your virtual butler, creating a world of possibilities for users like you and me: Say basic voice commands to start a favorite playlist. Suppose you have a question about absolutely anything. In that case, you can ask Google Assistant rather than look it up on your phone. You can also create a routine that gives you the weather and traffic report at a specific time each morning.

Home security is another popular use with Google Home. When an exterior light or motion sensor is triggered, Google Home can turn on a smart bulb inside the house, creating the impression that someone has noticed a sound outside. You can also create routines that turn on interior lights on a schedule if you’re away.

WHY DOES MY IPHONE SCREEN KEEP DIMMING BY ITSELF?

What types of devices work with Google Home?

There are hundreds of Google Home-enabled devices, with more coming on the market all the time:

Getting alerts when a device joins your Google Home Group

You should always be alerted when another device joins your Google Home Group, especially if you're the only person in your household. Your Google Home Group consists of all the Google and Chromecast devices set up in your home, and you'll always want to be aware and in control of them and not get any surprises. This way, you'll always know if someone is trying to hack into your Google account or add another device without your consent. Here's how to get alerts for your Google Home Group:

HOW GOOGLE MAPS LET LOVED ONES KNOW YOU'RE SAFE AT ALL TIMES

Privacy settings

Your privacy settings are one of the most essential features of your Google Home device. They control what devices are connected to it, private data and even web activity. You should double-check to see which actions you have specifically authorized, and switch off anything you don't remember consenting to. Here's how to update your Privacy Settings:

Deleting some or all of your private data

Google Assistant saves audio recordings of every voice command Google Home has ever heard, which helps the software to understand your voice and execute future commands better. However, it isn't critical to the device's operation. Here's how to delete that and all other data:

APPLE MESSAGES APP: 5 FEATURES TO REMEMBER

The most extreme privacy option is: Pausing all activity

You can also set Google Assistant to no longer keep logs of your data; however, that may cause some hiccups with how well Google Assistant functions. If your privacy is of the utmost importance to you, and you're willing to deal with anything from a few glitches from time to time to an entirely non-functional Google Assistant, from the main Google Assistant Activity page:

A screen will pop up, warning you that "pausing Web & App Activity may limit or disable more personalized experiences across Google services." At the bottom of that screen, press Pause to stop Google from logging your activity. Note that changing this setting does not delete your personal data from Google. It only prevents Google Assistant from recording more data going forward.

After you press Pause, you'll be returned to the main Google Assistant Activity page.

The fun stuff - making calls

One of the coolest features of Google Home is that you can make calls without having to do any of the work. For this feature to work correctly, however, you must ensure that it is set up correctly. Here's how to make sure that Google Home always displays your primary phone number when you request a call to be made:

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

Changing your nickname

A feature you can have the most fun with is having your Google Home device call you a nickname, which can be any name you want. Even if it's something as silly as 'Big Foot' or 'Mr. President,' there's a way for you to have your device call you anything you wish (and yes, cuss words are included).

Creating a speaker group

There's nothing better than jamming to your favorite music. However, you can enhance your listening experience by doubling or even tripling your sound by grouping up your devices. By grouping multiple speakers, you can make a whole-house audio system and turn it into a real party.

2022 military hardware to remember

With the launch of the Air Force’s hypersonic missile off the coast of California earlier this month, the Navy’s development of water-based drones over the summer and the recent unveiling of the B-21 Raiders, the U.S. military has made major technological advancements over the past year.

Here are some moments to remember:

The military unveiled the U.S. Air Force B-21 Raider in Palmdale, California. The B-21 Raider is the first new American bomber aircraft in more than three decades. In an email to Fox News Digital, a spokesperson confirmed the Air Force would transition its three-bomber fleet to a two-bomber fleet of B-21s and modernized B-52s. The branch confirmed that the first modified B-52s are expected to enter testing by the end of 2028.

PENTAGON HAS RECEIVED 'SEVERAL HUNDREDS' OF UFO REPORTS, NONE OF EXTRATERRESTRIAL ORIGIN SO FAR

The Air Force successfully fired an air-to-ground hypersonic missile that reached speeds more than five times the speed of sound in a test off the southern California coast, officials said. The test of the All-Up-Round AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) was the first launch of a full prototype operational missile, the Air Force said in a press release.

The U.S. started working on new types of weapons to help keep pace with China’s military development and continue to deter a potential invasion of Taiwan. The Navy had identified water-borne drones as an affordable but effective means of delaying that challenge. Its 5th Fleet had previously deployed smaller drones in waters off the Middle East. Four of the largest drones deployed over the summer were to take part in a multi-national naval exercise in the Pacific Ocean.

The U.S. Air Force launched an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile test in California. The operational test launched from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, the base confirmed on Twitter.

JEEP'S NEW MILITARY-INSPIRED TRAILER IS READY FOR THE ROUGHEST STUFF

The Wilder is a four-passenger light armored vehicle from Israeli defense contractor Plasan that has been designed for special forces’ use with innovative features. The four-passenger pickup uses a mid-engine design like a race car and is powered by a 159bhp 2.8-litre Cummins turbodiesel engine.

The Army test-fired Javelin anti-tank missiles at an exhibition in Fort Hood, Texas to demonstrate technological advancement in its fighting capabilities. During a series of weapons drills and exercises, soldiers fired Javelins and .50-caliber machine guns from seven-ton robotic vehicles. The demonstration consisted of 12 robotic platforms alongside six control vehicles, the culmination of four years of activity, according to one official at the exhibition.

You might not hear Oshkosh Defense's latest military vehicle coming, but it could be hard to miss. The eJLTV uses a diesel-hybrid powertrain. The eJLTV is a hybrid-powered version of the defense giant's hulking Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, of which approximately 15,000 currently serve the U.S. Army and U.S. Marines.

Hummer has re-enlisted in the U.S. Army. The military branch has purchased a GMC Hummer EV pickup for evaluation. The vehicle will be a top of the line Hummer EV Edition 1, which has a list price of $112,595.

Why does my iPhone screen keep dimming by itself?

Do you ever open up your iPhone and realize that your screen is a lot dimmer than it was an hour ago? Well, this isn't a coincidence. It's an automatic measure that Apple programmed into every iPhone device as a battery-saving measure.

The brightness will adjust by itself depending on how much light is in your surrounding environment. The less light you have around you, the dimmer your screen will get.

Perhaps you'd rather have your iPhone at the same brightness level at all times. Maybe you struggle with your eyesight and simply see better when your phone is at a higher brightness level regardless of if you're in a dark place or not.

The good news is, there's a way to adjust your iPhone's brightness level so that it never switches up on you again.

AT YEAR END, GREAT SAVES WORTH REMEMBERING: HOW AN IPHONE FEATURE HELPED RESCUE PEOPLE AFTER CAR CRASHES

How do I adjust the brightness level on my iPhone

Adjusting your brightness level is quite simple and there are two different ways to go about it. The first way goes as follows:

The other way to adjust your brightness levels on your iPhone is as follows:

How do I keep the brightness level from automatically dimming?

There are two things you need to do to keep your phone brightness at the same consistent level, and both require you to adjust in your Settings app.

The first is by turning off Auto-Brightness (this only applies to those with iPhone 14 Pro and Pro-Max models and later) and the second is turning off True Tone

SEND A FUN MESSAGE WITH THESE IPHONE TRICKS

How to turn off Auto-Brightness

How to turn off True Tone

What else can I do to prevent my brightness level from changing?

APPLE'S REPLACEMENT FOR THE PASSWORD

The biggest thing you can watch out for so that your brightness levels remain the same is to not allow your iPhone to overheat. Even if you have Auto-Brightness and True Tone turned off, your iPhone will automatically turn the brightness level down if the device is overheating as a safety measure.

Your phone can overheat sometimes in just seconds if it is left in the sun or any hot location (e.g. inside a car) for too long. It can also overheat if you have a faulty battery that needs to be replaced.

How do I check the status of my phone battery?

Go to Settings

Scroll down and select Battery

Select Battery Health & Charging

A display will appear of the health level of your battery.

If your maximum capacity is below 80%, Apple recommends looking into getting a new battery.

Apple Messages app: 5 features to remember

Apple's Messages app now lets users do a lot more than just text and share media.

With the latest iOS updates, even more functions are available, expanding customers' capabilities.

When you next use your iPhone, iPad or Mac, here are five functions to remember.

Tap the Memoji button and swipe right to add a new one. Apple lets users customize features, including skin ton, hair, eyes and more.

6 AMAZING NEW THINGS AN IPHONE CAN DO WITH THIS IOS UPDATE

The Memoji automatically becomes sticker packs that live in the keyboard and can be used in Messages, Mail and some third-party apps.

To use an animated Memoji, tap the Memoji button, pick your Memoji, hit the red button and record for up to 30 seconds.

Select another Memoji you created to choose a different Memoji with the same recording.

With iOS 16 or later. iPadOS 16 or later or macOS Ventura, Apple users can edit or unsend text messages.

Should the recipient device have an earlier version of iOS, they receive follow-up messages with the preface "Edited to" and the new message in quotation marks.

SMS messages cannot be unsent or edited.

Recently sent messages can be undone for up to two minutes after sending a message.

Touch and hold the message bubble and then tap Undo Send.

A note confirming that you unsent the message appears in both conversation transcripts: the sender's and the recipient’s.

When unsending a message, the user is notified that the recipient may still see the original message in the message transcript.

Conversely, type @ followed by their name.

"Depending on your contact's settings, a mention can notify them even if they've muted the conversation. To change this notification setting, go to Settings > Messages, then turn Notify Me on or off," Apple advises.

With iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, or later, you can recover individual messages or full conversations that were deleted.

Holiday gift cards: The hardest lesson I've learned

What I learned this holiday shopping season will forever change how I buy gift cards, and I wanted to share this hard lesson I discovered with you.

Avoid buying gift cards from retail stores

Con artists are latching onto gift cards as a convenient form of payment in their scams. In fact, gift card scams are up when shopping for cards in a retail store where criminal scam artists tamper with some cards - making them worthless after you add hard-earned cash value. Why do scammers love gift card payments so much?

NEW YEAR'S QUIZ! HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW THESE FACTS ABOUT RINGING IN A NEW YEAR?

Only purchase from cash-back gift card sources

If you buy gift cards through cash-back sources, you earn money and incentives just for buying gift cards. Cashback gift cards earn you a gift at the same time you are being generous to others.

Here's my list of the top reputable cashback gift card sources:

1) Ibotta

Ibotta is a wonderful app that allows you to earn cash back at some of your favorite stores like Target, Starbucks, Lowe's and over 1,500 other retailers. They include rewards for grocery stores, food delivery, movie and concert tickets, and more.

Once you buy the gift card for your loved one, you'll instantly receive cashback in your Ibotta account. Here's how to purchase gift cards for others in the Ibotta app:

Under the "shop by category" section, go to Gift Cards on the Ibotta app home screen and search or browse retailers by an assortment of categories including "nearby", "clothing", coffee and tea", "electronics", "health and beauty" and more.

Choose the store you want and select the buy gift card option. You'll note the percentage back you'll be receiving once you purchase the gift card. As you see in the example below, if you purchase an Old Navy gift card, you'll receive 7% back. Some cards you can receive as much as 20% back.

Click this link and use referral code mpiaurm to earn $10 when you submit your first receipt

Copy the code to insert into the Referral code box on Ibotta "Create account" page: mpiaurm.

2) Rakuten

This popular retailer offers easy ways to earn cash back. They can give cash back on select gift cards purchased at stores via the Rakuten website or by downloading their app. Note: you may not receive cash back for any portions of purchases made with your own gift cards or certificates, meaning you have to always pay with a regular credit or debit card in order to receive cash back.

They offer over 3,500 stores to choose from, including Bath & Body Works, Ulta, and Uber, and each store states the percentage of cash back you will receive once you purchase. Stores like Adidas and Petco offer up to as much as 6% cash back when you purchase gift cards through Rakuten.

Here's how to give your loved one a gift card from Rakuten and earn cash back:

Sign up for Rakuten here and earn $30 when you spend $30. See terms on Rakuten page

3) TopCashback

TopCashback gift cards offer up to 20.8% cash back when you purchase gift cards through their service. Some of the stores they work with include Macy's, Kohl's, and Dick's Sporting Goods. Here's how to send someone else a gift card through TopCashback.

4) PayPal Honey

Many people use PayPal as their main online payment service. However, most don't realize all the rewards that can come with using PayPal Honey as well. PayPal Honey does not offer cash back when consumers use gift cards, but what it will allow you to do is redeem points you earn while shopping through the app for cash, gift cards, or PayPal shopping credits.

Once you download the app and create an account with PayPal Honey, which is free to do, you can activate the Cash Back option so that you qualify for points on your eligible purchases. The app will then let you know while you're shopping at your favorite stores if you qualify for any points earned, as well as any exclusive offers the store is giving such as Double Cash Back.

Over 4,500 stores have a point system with PayPal Honey including Apple, Walmart and Home Depot.

Once you've earned enough points, you can redeem those points in exchange for cash, gift cards, or PayPal shopping credits If you want to use the points towards buying gift cards, you can do so from PayPal Honey's Redemption Page. All you have to do is:

Top tech 'deaths' of 2022: 5 to remember

While 2022 saw the introduction of the iPhone 14, the rise of Artificial Intelligence for social media and much more, the year also said farewell to some classics – and not-so-classics.

While some of these platforms and tech gadgets were relatively short-lived, others were around for decades.

But, as in the fashion industry, one minute you're wired and the next you're tired.

In memoriam, here are five tech "deaths" to take note of:

CALIFORNIA RESCUERS SAY 'FIND MY IPHONE' FEATURE HELPED SAVE WOMAN AFTER 200-FT. PLUMMET

Introduced in 2001, the first-generation iPod could hold thousands of songs to dance to. Just six years later, it took a hit with the release of the iPhone.

In May, Apple said that the iPod touch would be discontinued – the last remaining iPod on the market.

"Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impact more than just the music industry – it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared," said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "Today, the spirit of iPod lives on."

Following more than 25 years on the web, Internet Explorer was officially retired on June 15.

Microsoft wrote in an update that users are encouraged to move over to Microsoft Edge, with Internet Explorer progressively redirecting to the new browser, providing support for legacy and modern websites and apps.

Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge will be supported through at least 2029.

While the Long-Term Servicing Channel of Windows 10 will still include Internet Explorer next year, all consumer versions will end support of the browser, according to The Verge.

ARE YOU BEING STALKED? A SIMPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE

In January. Blackberry decommissioned the infrastructure and services used by its legacy software and phone operating systems, saying that it was focused on "providing intelligent security software and services to enterprises and governments around the world."

"At the time of termination of services, devices running BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier software, BlackBerry 10 software, and BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier software through either carrier or Wi-Fi connections will no longer reliably function … Applications (BlackBerry Link, BlackBerry Desktop Manager, and BlackBerry Blend) will also have limited functionality," the company said in a Dec. 2021 release.

"The independence, mobility, security and privacy that so many of us came to associate with those ground-breaking BlackBerry devices remains alive and strong, as does the spirit of invention and innovation that got us here," Executive Chairman and CEO of BlackBerry Limited John Chen wrote in a blog post on Jan. 4.

Meta is halting development of Portal.

Portal, which was first released in 2018, was a smart display device with video calling capability and an AI-powered "smart camera."

"It was just going to take so long, and take so much investment to get into the enterprise segment, it felt like the wrong way to invest your time and money," CTO Andrew Bosworth told employees, according to Mashable Southeast Asia.

Like other tech firms, Meta laid off employees in November.

The iPhone 12 mini debuted in 2020.

However, two generations later, Apple opted to replace the device with a new iPhone 14 "Plus."

The advertising touted the "big and bigger" smartphones.

Why Windows is #1 target for malware: 2 easy ways to stay safe

Wanna know just how bad the problem of malware is? According to a study by Atlas VPN, there were a staggering 62.29 million malware threats across the first three quarters of 2022, averaging roughly 228,164 malware threats a day.

However, there is some good news; malware threats were down by nearly 34% from last year. Malware threats steadily decreased quarter by quarter as the year progressed, with cases lowering by 4% between the first and second quarters and a further 14% from the second to third.

It was still no comfort to Windows users, as Windows earned the unwanted distinction of being the most malware-prone operating system in 2022.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

According to Atlas VPN, 59.8 million malware samples were detected on Windows operating systems in the first three quarters of 2022. This makes up for roughly 95.6% of all malware cases detected during the same time frame.

Distantly following Windows for malware detections during the same period were:

HOW SCAMMERS ARE POSING AS YOUR CABLE AND INTERNET PROVIDERS

The simplest answer to this question is that Windows is by far the most common operating system on devices worldwide; therefore, Windows is the operating system most targeted by bad guys, simply from an efficiency standpoint. Also, since so many devices around the world are running Windows, when malware spreads, the number of systems infected can quickly become enormous.

Additionally, Windows users are far more likely to inadvertently download malware to their devices when installing applications sourced from the internet. This is because, compared to an operating system like Mac with a dedicated and safe library for application downloads, Windows users must, for the most part, download applications via a standard internet browser, a connection that is much more vulnerable to attack.

If you want to understand from a more technical standpoint, read on.

From its original inception (well before we all had easy access to the internet), Windows was designed to be used by only one user per device, which meant that the ability to password-protect multiple user accounts like we do now was not built into its original framework. Therefore, from the beginning, Windows was built without crucial security measures, which included proper user accounts and restricted file permissions that protected vital system components. Even though today, Windows does employ a multi-user framework (i.e., multiple accounts with separate passwords), it has never set up a firewall that is natively built into the operating framework.

This means that unless a Windows user purchases third-party security software and sets it up properly, their Windows system is still wide open to attacks from bad guys once they connect to the internet.

HOW YOUR IPHONE OR ANDROID CAN PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN 24/7

Are you being stalked? A simple software update can save your life.

We've all heard about the unintended consequence of Apple's AirTag being used by stalkers and thieves to track people. The company has released multiple updates it claims to increase user safety. Still, up until now, nothing has mitigated the risks.

However, Apple has been working overtime to help prevent stalking by people using the AirTag maliciously and has released an update that provides more accurate tools to help you find and locate unwanted AirTags in your vicinity.

HOW TO RESCUE YOURSELF FROM HOLIDAY TRAVEL NIGHTMARES

Apple's latest update improves the feature known as Precision Finding. This feature has always been included with AirTags since its initial release. However, it was previously only possible to locate your registered AirTags. Now, it can identify unknown AirTags following you without your knowledge.

Your iPhone will alert you if there is an unrecognizable AirTag close to you and even make a noise alert if the AirTag is difficult to hear so that you become aware of it much quicker. This feature is only available for those with iPhone 11 models or higher. You must have the latest iOS16.2 update or later to install it.

Hackers latest trick looks like free movie streaming

The recent FIFA World Cup brought out another round of bad actors capitalizing on the streaming demand of the popular games.

Instead of delivering a link to a legit way of watching, those who took the bait are sent to malicious sites that install malware on devices.

That's the trouble with linking to what appear to be free streams and downloads of movies, video and music sources.

Blind linking can lead to more danger for your device than you may realize.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

What is the risk of downloading movies illegally?

Criminals and hackers everywhere want to make it their mission to trick people into giving them their money, private information, or both. They do this with movies and popular online entertainment by providing downloadable links that look super convincing. People who end up clicking them usually think that they'll be able to consume what they want to watch at no cost.

HOW SCAMMERS ARE POSING AS YOUR CABLE AND INTERNET PROVIDERS

In reality, many of these links contain all kinds of malware that will give the hacker access to your information. And what's worse, hackers are working overtime to figure out ways for these downloadable files to sneak past any kind of antivirus software that may stop them in their tracks.

What will happen to my device?

The change in your device may not happen immediately when you try downloading these pirated films. But eventually, you may notice your device becoming much slower, random apps opening and closing without your knowledge, and even your battery draining quickly.

For example, back in 2021, ReasonLabs found a new form of malware disguising itself as a way to watch the latest SpiderMan film for free online while it was still in theaters. It was a malicious file containing cryptocurrency mining malware, which can steal your device's resources and hunt for online currencies.

SURPRISINGLY, THIS APP IS CAUSING NEARLY 50% OF MACOS MALWARE — DELETE NOW

When consumers would download this file, the code would exclude antivirus software to keep it from tracking any suspicious activity and would mine the cryptocurrency Monero (XMR). You can imagine how much of a headache this caused for anyone who thought they were just getting an opportunity to watch a new film for free.

How can I protect my device from malicious files?

The most important and necessary way for you to protect your device from all types of malware is by installing solid antivirus software. Downloading antivirus software will allow you to scan any file on your computer for malware before you make the mistake of clicking on it.

See my expert review of the best antivirus protection for your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices by searching ‘Best Antivirus’ at CyberGuy.com.

Is there a website I can use to check if the file is malicious?

Yes, and it's called VirusTotal.com. This website is owned by Google and is able to scan links to files that could have malware. All you have to do is follow these steps:

How to rescue yourself from holiday travel nightmares

The Southwest Airlines scheduling systems meltdown continues into Wednesday as the airline struggles to recover its operations canceling more than 2,500 flights today. The travel nightmare began leading into Christmas weekend with airlines delaying 8,425 and canceling 5,200 across the country even at airports far away from heavy winter storms and continues the week leading into New Year's Eve.

Brutal below freezing temps, high winds, rain and snow pounding the midwest, eastern seaboard, and as far west as Washington state. FlightAware's MiseryMap is lit up like a Christmas tree with massive delays at major hubs throughout the entire U.S. still and largely centered on Southwest Airlines.

SOUTHWEST AIRLINES ISSUES SECOND APOLOGY, ANNOUNCES RESOURCES FOR CANCELLATIONS, REIMBURSEMENTS, LOST LUGGAGE

I helped a friend by tapping into American award miles and using these tools to get him home from El Paso, Texas. He reported lines of people hundreds deep at the Southwest ticket counter and waiting on hold for hours without his call answered by a human being.

That's when I turned to these tools below to get him out within a few hours of distress. He is already back home after booking a couple of flights through Phoenix airport (PHX) and landing at a nearby airport about another 30-45 minute drive from his home airport.

TYRUS BLASTS BIDEN ADMIN'S RESPONSE TO SOUTHWEST AIRLINES DEBACLE: NO HELP WHEN AMERICANS ARE IN TROUBLE

Passengers in some airports continue to remain stranded as rental car options and alternative transportation methods began to sell out. No matter which airline you book, arming yourself with these essential tools before heading to the airport will help if your flight gets delayed or canceled.

SOUTHWEST AIRLINES FLIGHT DIVERTED TO MILWAUKEE DUE TO 'POTENTIAL MECHANICAL ISSUE' AMID CANCELLATION CHAOS

Canceled flight? These tools can help get you on the next flight while others wait in line going nowhere.

Bookmark this flightsfrom.com site on your phone to see all routes and scheduled flights from every airport. Knowing this can help with rebooking when airline ticket counter agents see limited options. It seems counterintuitive to consider flying further away from your desired destination especially when airline and ticketing sites don't present routes that are far out of the way.

Backtracking to cities can offer an open seat on a flight journey that zigzags to a more distant airport and still get you where you want to go faster than waiting for traditional routes to open. Being able to piece together information on an unconventional route that involves more than one airline is one of the most powerful benefits of the flightsfrom.com site.

Flight Board app helps you track delayed and canceled flights. Most valuable is how it shows which flights are still operating from an airport you are standing in when yours gets delayed or canceled.

This helps you understand which other flights are operating to get you to your destination. Remember to screenshot a photo of the flights available for the moment you are negotiating a recovery flight. Click to get Flight Board app for iOS and Android.

ExpertFlyer site shows vast flight inventory that airlines hide from you. Frequent fliers use this as an essential must-have subscription that reveals far more than any airline wants you to know. Fact is, this tool alone can help you steer an airline representative toward available flights they may not even see.

I especially love a feature that allows you to click for additional flight status information that reveals a log of each flight. On one occasion, I was told by a gate agent after a flight was canceled that it was weather-related and that she could not help.

ExpertFlyer then allowed me to show the true data proving the flight was canceled for "operational" reasons with no mention of weather. Yes, I got a hotel voucher that paid for the night until my recovery flight took off first thing in the morning.

ExpertFlyer has a free seat alert function, and the real full working version is a paid monthly or annual subscription which for me pays for itself in spades. When it comes to free apps and services online of any worth, if you are getting a valuable product for free, then you are the product. ExpertFlyer is found here.

Get a quick recap about their app in the video below.

LiveATC app started as a fun way to hear air traffic control talking to the flight deck. Today, this can be one of the most essential recovery tools when delays start targeting your journey.

Find your city, then choose the airport and the ground channel for your departure. You will often hear exactly why your flight is delayed. And in some circumstances, you will hear the flight being canceled before it is announced to the cabin or flashes on the airline app.

The advantage of spotting trouble ahead of the masses can help you get into the next few seats still available on the following flights to get you to your destination. LiveATC is here.

ITA Matrix site shows all available flights for sale on all airlines at that moment. You cannot buy a ticket here, just get informed. Best bet is to buy an airline ticket directly from the airline you plan to travel. What works great here is this will show you flights available to your destination for sale available in real-time.

It shows other airlines which could be a better flight recovery option if your flight gets scrapped. Airlines would rather accommodate you on a later flight on the same company aircraft to save money. Fact is, you can often nudge your way into an airline confirming travel on a competitor in order to resolve a failure that sits on their shoulders. Search flights on ITA Matrix here.

How scammers are posing as your cable and internet providers

The Federal Trade Commission has recently gotten countless reports of scam artists pretending to be cable and internet companies. These fraudsters are so good at deception that even the savviest consumer can get duped.

Despite call-blocking apps, software, and caller ID, scam artists are conning hard-working people like you and me of our hard-earned cash over the phone.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

A woman recently emailed me saying this very thing happened to her and her husband:

"We just received a scam phone call yesterday addressing my husband by name and claiming to be Cox Cable. We had just canceled Cox cable TV two or three days before, which this caller was privy about. They offered a 40% discount if we reconnected. I inquired about the cost, but before he would give me the cost, he wanted to verify our account and asked for my mother's maiden name. That's when the red flag went up. I said, 'May I call you back in 15 minutes', with the intention of checking out the phone number and calling Cox Cable. The caller replied that he'd call me back. Once I did a Google search of the number and called Cox Cable, I realized it was, in fact, a scam call. The caller didn't call back. I followed up with a call to my older parents to warn them about these types of scams."

"The question in my mind is, how did they know we had just canceled cable service with Cox Cable after we'd had it for the past 11 years? Is there a breach in the Cox Cable data system?"

GEN Z WON'T TALK ON PHONE — NOW, 'THE PHONE LADY' IS ON A MISSION

Scammers posing as trusted sources like your cable or internet provider make it all the easier for their victims to fall prey to them and willingly give out their personal information. And sadly, more and more scam artists tend to prey on people aged 65 and older because:

CALIFORNIA RESCUERS SAY 'FIND MY IPHONE' FEATURE HELPED SAVE WOMAN AFTER 200-FT. PLUMMET

Thankfully, there are easy red flags to look out for to determine if the person calling you is genuinely who they claim to be:

Unfortunately, some scam artists are advanced enough to make their caller IDs appear as if they are, in fact, the company they are claiming to be. If they are legit, they will leave a message for you to call them back with the number, allowing you to do a Google search and ensure the number is safe. They are most likely scam artists if they don't leave a message.

HOW YOUR IPHONE OR ANDROID CAN PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN 24/7

It is alarming that the scam artist appeared to know the maiden name of the woman's mother and that they had just canceled their cable subscription.

A mother's maiden name is one of the most popular security questions people choose to authenticate their identity, should they get locked out of their account. Understandable because this is an easy question to remember; however, it's also easy to track down, as a simple internet search could discover it. Data brokers or "people search" sites collect your information, including your birthday, phone number, and address, from various websites, then sell it to people searching for you online for a small fee.

Fortunately, there are ways to get a handle on what personal information of yours is out there on the internet. The most surefire way is to invest in a trusted removal service as covered in our article here.

As for how they knew about the woman and her husband canceling their subscription, that is strange. It’s not unfathomable to think there may be prying eyes in your email that may reveal you canceled your cable. You may consider locking up your email with a secure email account if these calls keep coming. Check out my #1 pick for secure email at CyberGuy.com/Mail.

How your iPhone or Android can protect your children 24/7

Kids are gaining access to technology at much younger ages; however, big tech companies like Apple and Google are continually improving their safety precautions for minors, which is excellent news for parents.

Apple has a Family Sharing feature that allows parents to create a family group and add up to 5 family members with Apple devices

Once your group is created, you can set up parental controls for any children in the group, enabling controls such as Screen Time monitoring and the Ask to Buy feature, which requires parents' permission to buy or download apps.

Once you've created a Family Sharing account and created Child Accounts for your kids, you can enable various Parental Controls on their Apple devices.

Like the iPhone plan, Androids have a family group feature that allows a family manager to add up to five people. The only catch is that the family member must be at least 13 years old to be added to the group. Those 12 and under can only be added if the family manager creates a Google account for them. This can be done while setting up the child's Android device.

California rescuers say 'Find my iPhone' feature helped save woman after 200-ft. plummet

Apple's "Find My iPhone" feature aided in the rescue of a woman who had crashed her vehicle following a traffic collision in Southern California

The San Bernardino County Fire Department wrote on Facebook Monday that firefighters had been dispatched that day to a reported traffic collision on Highway 18, north of 40th Street.

A person who made a 911 call reported locating a vehicle over the side and well off the roadway.

That call was "balanced to an ‘Over the Side Rescue’ assignment," in order to bring in additional personnel and equipment.

Three engines, a heavy rescue truck company and one Battalion Chief responded at 6:12 a.m. PT.

The department said crews found a vehicle around 200 feet below the roadway.

Firefighter-paramedics located an adult woman with serious injuries, and crews initiated advanced life support interventions while arriving rescuers set up a rope system to safely raise the victim and rescuers.

The firefighters utilized specialized Urban Search & Rescue equipment. That equipment included a capstan raising system to safely haul the members up.

After being raised to safety, the patient was loaded into an awaiting ambulance for transport to a local trauma center.

"The patient had likely been in her crashed vehicle overnight after leaving a family gathering. Family members became concerned after not speaking with her this morning and utilized Apple’s "Find my iPhone" feature to track her whereabouts. Upon investigating the phone’s location they found the vehicle over the side [and] called 911," the department said.

6 amazing new things an iPhone can do with this iOS update

Apple is outdoing itself once again with its latest iOS16.2 update for iPhone devices. Not only are new iOS downloads important for security fixes, sometimes they are packed full of amazing new features to make your iPhone come alive in new ways.

They already added a ton of features with the previous iOS16.1 update, including the iCloud Shared Photo Library and support for Apple Fitness+. I'm cutting through all the new stuff to share highlights in the iOS 16.2 update that can make your life better.

Of the multiple unique new tricks, I'm excited about these below on iPhone.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

Perhaps one of the most exciting new tools on the iOS16.2 update is the Apple Music Sing feature. This is a karaoke feature that will be available for Apple Music listeners. It allows you to sing along to millions of songs on the Apple Music streaming platform by giving you the option to lower the volume of the lead vocals and take control as the lead singer.

Music Sing is compatible with any iPhone 11 model or newer, select iPads, and the latest Apple TV 4K.

TAKE BACK YOUR PRIVACY WITH THIS NEW IPHONE SAFETY FEATURE

Advanced Data Protection is an optional feature that comes with the update, and it will allow users to expand end-to-end encryption to various iCloud data categories including iMessage, Notes, and Photos.

This will significantly increase cloud data security and give users the chance to protect the vast majority of their data, allowing people to worry less about their information being stolen or publicized without their permission.

SEND A FUN MESSAGE WITH THESE IPHONE TRICKS

APPLE’S EMERGENCY SOS VIA SATELLITE FEATURE IS NOW LIVE. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS.

Another fun feature will be available in the digital whiteboard app called Freeform. The app allows you to draw or insert sticky notes for yourself on an infinite canvas. The app allows you to share a board with up to 100 people, who can make their own additions and comments.

All collaborators need to be using an Apple device in order to access the creation. You can also drop in text boxes, shapes, photos, videos, links, PDFs, and more. The app will also be available for iPad and Mac devices in case users want a larger space to create than their smaller iPhone screens.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR IPHONE IS LISTENING TO YOU

Two new Lock Screen widgets will be available with the iOS 16.2 update. One will be for the Sleep app and the other for the Health app. The Sleep app widget will allow you to view all your most recent sleep schedules and stages, while the Health app will give you a quick look at your medication schedule when you need it.

These widgets will allow people to take better control of their physical health and keep track of their habits. Learn how to customize your lock screen widgets by heading over to CyberGuy.com and searching "lock screen."

4 SIMPLE AND POWERFUL TIPS FOR MASTERING YOUR IPHONE CALCULATOR

This feature will only be available on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models, yet it will allow you to hide your wallpaper and notifications when the Always On Display mode is turned on.

When you want more privacy, the Always on Display mode will turn lock screens solid black so no one can see what pops up on your screen. You can also modify this slightly by toggling on the Show Wallpaper or Show Notifications options as well.

APPLE’S REPLACEMENT FOR THE PASSWORD

AirDrop is a super convenient feature for when you want to quickly send or receive pictures and videos. Watch out though, cause it can be bad news if those pictures and videos get to the wrong person.

That's why iOS16.2 is limiting AirDrop's previous 'Everyone' setting. The option will now only have a more protective "Everyone for 10 Minutes" feature instead so that unwanted content from strangers can be limited.

Once the 10 minutes is up, people may only AirDrop pictures and videos to their contacts.

Apple dropped the latest update on Tuesday, Dec. 13. iPhone users should have received a notification within their Settings app as soon as the update was available to install, or you can go to Settings > Software Update to download and install manually.

How to pick which wireless earbuds are best for you

Wireless earbuds are an essential add-on right after the perfect charger for our tech devices.

We all have different needs for wireless earbuds. Maybe you want a pair that will last through your grueling workouts, or you just need them for your Zoom meetings when you're working from home.

That's why I've gathered a list of the best earbuds you can get your hands on this year.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

The 2nd Generation of the Apple AirPods Pro is an excellent choice for those looking for great noise cancelation and immersive sound. They come with what's known as an H-2 chip, which provides spatial audio for the listener making for an incredible listening experience.

Being able to block out much of life's distractions is why I love the Active Noise Cancelation feature that allows you to make outside noise almost disappear. With a quick long press on the volume of your iPhone you can choose Transparency Mode if you feel more comfortable hearing the surrounding noise in addition to what you're listening to. AirPods Pro also comes with Touch Control, which allows you to control the volume of what you're listening to directly from your AirPod stem.

I will soon not forget touring the audio labs within Apple's headquarters. My jaw about hit the ground at how huge the single focus of audio receives at Apple. It's astonishing how deeply the research and development team goes to innovate sound in their products. I remember thinking that Apple's audio R&D labs were as vast as some entire companies' footprint in size.

That's likely where one of AirPods Pro's new best features is developed. The charging case in generation 2 now comes with a built-in speaker that makes finding a misplaced case and earbud easier to locate.

The Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus is an excellent choice for people looking for earbuds that can last a long time on a single charge. These earbuds can have continuous sound for up to 11 hours at a time without recharging.

Once you do need to recharge them, just 3 minutes of charging will get you another hour of playtime. Aside from Galaxy Buds Pro's top-notch charging qualities, they also come with 1 internal and 2 external microphones. That audio abundance makes it so you never have to worry about your voice being drowned out by the outside if you're on an important call. Keep in mind Galaxy Buds Pro is compatible with both Apple and Android devices.

The Apple AirPods 3rd Generation earbuds are yet another quality release from the mega-tech company.

These popular earbuds have features that were once exclusive only to Pro-level AirPods, including personalized spatial audio and Find My integration to avoid losing your pair.

They also come with a case that's compatible with Apple's MagSafe Charging system, allowing for up to 30 hours of listening on one charge.

These more affordable AirPods even come with quick access to the Siri feature when you need information fast. I love the force sensor allows you to control your entertainment and answer calls immediately. For more in-depth coverage of AirPods, head to CyberGuy.com and search "Airpods".

These earbuds by Cleer Audio are great for safe listening so that you don't damage your eardrums with high volume.

The Open Ear design allows you to hear your surroundings naturally while still enjoying whatever you're listening to with a lot less chance of damaging your ear canal, unlike other earbuds that reach deep into the canal.

The design from the San Diego-based engineers added a flexible hinge that goes over your ear as well, so you don't have to worry about them falling out of your ears. They feature touch controls that allow you to answer and end calls, adjust volume, and change tracks without having to take your phone out.

One of the best features of these Samsung earbuds is that they are water-resistant, so you don't ever have to be overly worried about them getting ruined if you spill a little water or get caught in the rain one day.

They're protected for as much as 3 feet of immersion for as long as 30 minutes. And they come with all the other features you'd expect from high-quality earbuds as well - Active Noise Cancelation, Touch Music Control, and long-lasting battery life with a wireless charging case.

Perhaps the most unique feature of these wireless earbuds by TAGRY is the charging case. The case comes with an LED power display and a whopping 60 hours of playback that shows the power level of the charging case and the earbuds.

The earbuds also have a nano-coating that can prevent water and sweat from penetrating, so it's great for athletes who want to use them while they work out.

They come with One-Step Pairing and Easy Touch Control, allowing the earbuds to connect with your device as soon as you open the case. I like that they come in three different sizes, so you're more than likely to find a pair that fits your ears best.

How to get in touch with Amazon customer service directly

While speaking with a good friend Steve recently, he shared how frustrating it is to reach a human being for help with your needs at giant retailer Amazon. Sometimes it's just a question about an order, trouble with delivery, or you want to return something and for an unexplained reason, it seems like the option for help is gone.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

While Amazon prides itself on its speedy delivery system and accuracy with orders, mistakes can happen. Whether it be that your package is missing, taking a super long time to ship, or you received it just fine but realized you don't need or want the product anymore, it'll make your life much easier to know how to get in direct contact with Amazon should there be a problem.

Contacting them is there, but it's buried. Here's what you need to do.

PORCH PIRATES STOLE 260 MILLION PACKAGES THIS YEAR; RETIRED COP EXPLAINS WAYS TO PREVENT IT THIS CHRISTMAS

Amazon has multiple routes that consumers can take to get in contact with them.

To start, the quickest way would be to first try visiting their Customer Service page. You can do this by logging into your Amazon account, hovering over your name in the top right-hand corner, and clicking Customer Service.

HOW TO GET ALEXA TO SPEAK MORE LIKE YOU

If you're having an issue with a recent item you ordered, it will likely appear at the top of your Customer Service page and Amazon will give you the option to click on that item directly to solve the issue you have with it. And if you need help with a different item, they give you two other options:

3 MUST-DO ALEXA SETTINGS TO MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER

4 COMMON THINGS ALEXA CAN DO BETTER THAN YOU

But let's get to what we want... an immediate solution actually communicating directly with someone!

If you can't find an answer to your problem by trying out these tabs, you can go back to the top of your Customer Service page an do the following

Option 1 - Via Chatbot

We've done this a number of times and their customer support team is very accommodating.

1) Click 'Help with something else.'

APPLE, GOOGLE, AMAZON, AND FACEBOOK ARE ALWAYS LISTENING UNLESS YOU CHANGE THESE SETTINGS

By clicking this option, Amazon will give you more options of what they can help you with. Some of these options include help with your Prime account, login security, and subscriptions.

But if these options still don't feel like they fit your problem, try...

2) Clicking the Something else button.

AMAZON OFFERS ADVICE TO RING USERS WITH ANGRY NEIGHBORS

When you click on Something else, you will be led to another webpage with a list of more options like Gifts & Registries and Amazon physical stores.

You'll see another option available to you at the very bottom labeled I need more help.

3) Click the "I need more help" button

ALEXA IS LISTENING: MAKE THESE IMPORTANT PRIVACY TWEAKS ON YOUR AMAZON ECHO DEVICE NOW

When you select this option, you will be led to Amazon's Live Chat window.

Within this window, you can chat with an automated messenger bot that might be able to give you more help with solving your problem.

HOW TO SET UP ALEXA FOR EMERGENCIES

What if I want to speak with a human being directly while I'm in the chatbot?

If you're looking to speak with a person who works at Amazon, the best way to do that is by going to the live chatbot and typing "Talk to a representative" into the live chat system. Once you press send, your chatbot will provide you with 3 different options:

If you select one of the first two options, Amazon will put you in contact with a person that you can speak to and have your issue addressed.

Option 2: Phone

You can try calling Amazon's Customer Service phone number at 1-888-280-4331. Their Customer Service phone number operates 24/7.

Option 3: Email

Amazon's customer service email address is cs-reply@amazon.com. You can try emailing them, although Amazon prefers customers to get help through their live chatbot or phone number.

Option 4: Social media

Amazon also has a Customer Service Twitter account under the handle @AmazonHelp. This account can answer questions in 12 different languages.

Years ago I authored a draft of the User-Friendly Directory back when we bought software on shelves in a box. It was so frustrating to find the support number and when you call, a directory tree of prompts made you want to pull out your hair.

The support phone numbers were often buried deep in the manual, so I thought why not publish an easy guide that lists every tech company and their support options?

I thought my book idea was such a genius yet simple breakthrough that any publisher would grab a chance at printing it. That was until each one of them asked me what happens when the tech support numbers are changed.

This article today on how to get a human being to help you will hopefully make your life easier.

How to tell if someone is snooping on your Android

It takes seconds for someone to compromise privacy and security on your Android phone. Though compromise from strangers such as hackers and other cybercriminals are more commonly discussed, sometimes it is the snooping by those near you that can be the most shocking. Detecting that your phone has been tampered with is also hard for you to detect when a snoop has infiltrated your private life - and I've got help with finding out.

As a safeguard, simply follow the steps below to bolster your phone’s security, so it isn’t susceptible to hackers or snoops.

Take back your privacy with this new iPhone safety feature

Did you know someone could be using your iPhone to track your precise location without your knowledge or permission? Fortunately, Apple now provides a feature called Safety Check for us to discover and stop these unauthorized trackers.

What’s great about this new tool is that it automatically detects what you have shared, like your location or photos, and with whom and how to immediately disable access and information.

It’s a game-changer when it comes to your safety. It can mean the difference between life and death, especially if someone’s in a domestic abuse situation.

What is Safety Check?

You'll need to have updated your iPhone to the latest iOS 16 software before you'll be able to see the new Safety Check feature. It was created by Apple for users who feel that their personal safety is at risk, whether it be a case of stalking, harassment, or those at risk of domestic abuse or similar situations.

When Safety Check is enabled, it allows users to choose with whom they are sharing their information, restrict Messages and FaceTime to their iPhone, reset system privacy permission for apps, change passcodes, change their Apple ID password, and more.

Where can I find Safety Check on my iPhone?

What apps use Safety Check when it is enabled?

The following apps will stop sharing information with people whom you have restricted once Safety Check is enabled:

When enabled, what information stops being shared with Safety Check?

When Safety Check is enabled, it will remove any data gathered by the following apps, networks, and features:

APPLE, GOOGLE, AMAZON AND FACEBOOK ARE ALWAYS LISTENING UNLESS YOU CHANGE THESE SETTINGS

What features are available in Safety Check?

Safety Check comes with three main features

1. Emergency Reset

The first feature to take a look at within Safety Check is Emergency Reset. This is available for anyone who wants to immediately reset access for all people and apps, as well as review and reset all settings associated with your Apple ID.

3. Quick Exit

Finally, in case you need to quickly conceal the information that you're setting up within your Safety Check app, all you have to do is tap the Quick Exit button and it will save any changes you've made and immediately bring you back to the Safety Check homepage. No one will be able to access what changes you've made in the meantime essentially covering up your tracks.

Once you click on Manage Sharing & Access, it will take you to lists of your contacts, apps, and other devices (Mac laptops, iPads, etc.) and you will then be allowed to pick and choose who and what you want to share your information with. All your actions will be saved, and you can always go back into Safety Check later on and change your work.
